I need to confirm the nose strut pressure for a CJ. For some reason my nose strut is at maximum extension and I can't get it to stay down. I don't recall it always being like this. I noticed it after dropping the plane off the jacks.
First question: What can cause the nose strut to hyper extend without adding any additional pressure? I have the schrader valve mod and I depressed it momentarily and I got hydro oil out.
Second question: The manual states 2 MPa, I calculate this to be ~290 PSI, is this correct?
Third Question" Whats the best way to release the pressure? add the oil, and then add nitrogen? I know how the manual states, I want the easy way. Whats the normal extension length for the strut?
On a completely different note. Whats the best tool to remove the Rear #6 cyl spark plug, without removing the exhaust?

Ernie,I am away from my manuals so I cannot answer your questions about the nose strut, except that it much easier to adjust the pressure if you have the special tool, but it is made for the stock strut fillers not Schraders. I'm sure with some adapters you could mod the tool to fit your Schraders. Â
#6 spark plug is best removed with a #6 spark plug tool.  Russian and Chinese #6 plug tool are the same. We carry the Chinese tool p/n 64411/43 (at)$40.00 each.

My last CJ didn't have the schraders, and I had the proper strut fill tool. I kinda need the spark plug wrench now. I was hoping for a Lowes or NAPA solution.

Your strut should not "stay down". If you are able to grab the prop counter weights and give a hard tug down throwing your weight into the process the strut should compress a little. (It will also compress when you run the engine up with brakes on)
I like my struts a little on the softer side. That said, anything more than a momentary and I mean QUICK tap on the valve to release air will probably release too much air.
If the nose strut becomes too soft you will have problems with the over center cam and steering will be very difficult.
If you have the auto spark plug conversion, use a plug socket with a hex end and a box end wrench for the #6 plug.
I suggest the first thing you do is contact Doug Sapp and invest in some CJ manuals and you'll have everything you need at your finger tips.

If you don't have the #6 spark plug wrench tool, just take the inter-cylinder baffle off and use a normal wrench.
