Having fulfilled an ambition to get to Ireland, and having changed the radiator after the small leak (thanks for the suggestions on that), I am now looking to go east of Calais (FR) preferably somewhere interesting in Holland. Would be good if would be in reach of Amsterdam or a point of interest by train or bus. Any suggestions/recommendations? I gather they are not all that supportive of GA?

Do UK folk or Dutch folk do the straight across route to East England coast or cross the water at the shortest point? I seem to recall DJC saying he had some fuel reading issues on a straight across trip.

Hi! Graeme,
I have regularly attended Texel EHTX it is a holiday island and many Dutch
people go there, but it is a ferry and rail issue to get to Amsterdam.
The most friendly and accommodating airfield I have ever used.
They allow camping during their rally but there is ample accommodation
locally as well as the airport hotel. Bike hire is fine and easy ride to
nearest holiday resorts.
I fly direct from Wickenby and with Norfolk sticking out into the North Sea
theres only about 30 minutes of flight without land in sight . about 1hour
45mnutes total .....I think their rally clashes with the LAA Rally dates
this year but I know where I'm going "!
Regards
Bob H G-PTAG.

Graeme, Holland is a small country so almost anywhere is within reasonable train distance of most other places. I certainly wouldn't say it is unfriendly to GA. I have found Midden Zeeland, Hoogeveen, Lelystad and above all Texel to be very welcoming, and like Bob would very much recommend the Texel Rally. It is only slightly mad people like Bob H and those like me who have had a serious fall out with the Belgian authorities who go straight across 100 miles of N Sea. Everyone else goes over to Calais or Dunkirk (carefully avoiding the Calais Nucleaire!) and then along the Belgian coast. As far as I am aware there is no GA airfield within taxi distance of Amsterdam and I might be inclined to do serious Amsterdam tourism by Easyjet or whatever and fly elsewhere in Holland for the pleasure of flyingyour own plane. You may get more specific advice from our Dutch Europa friends.
Regards, David Joyce, GXSDJ

Hi Graeme

Hilversum is a nice grass airfield just to the east of the Schiphol zone, and there are trains from the town of Hilversum to Amsterdam.

I have used Hilversum in the past and found it to be a very friendly airfield. Keep a good lookout for traffic though, it can get busy around there, with everybody at 1000-1200 feet because of the proximity of the Schiphol zone.

John

Made it to Hilversum Holland today from near Luton. It all went very well and the staff very helpful and friendly. Routed via Ostend and the coast on the way and straight over the 100 miles of sea on the way back (couldn't believe how many boats and platforms there were on the North sea.
Belgians also very helpful and the range not active. Kept below 1200ft around Amsterdam TMA.
Took the Brompton and used the cycle track through the scrub-land to the town for a bite to eat (4Km would make a pleasant walk). Used Skydemon for flight plans and GAR form and that all worked well too.
various grass runways, Mogas and landing fee of 15E.
