For the Yak 55M, does anyone have the airspeed below which it is safe to open the canopy without damaging it?

There are two canopy open positions. One around 6 inches open and another fully open for entry and egress to/from the cockpit.

Perhaps there are two airspeeds, one for 6” open and another for fully open?

Does anyone have experience with flying canopy open that they are prepared to share? Comments welcome on cockpit air turbulence, through cockpit airflow and pressure. Did your maps get sucked out, for example?

I owned a 55 for several years.  I do not believe there is an airspeed restriction for the canopy.  I have flown at normal cruise speeds with the canopy open and for sure with it at the first notch.  I like the design in many ways as oppoed to the sukhoi design and I also like the vent at the top center - it allows great ventilation without the noise of the open cockpit.  The airflow is not bad with cockpit open - but of course the noise increases which can interfere with transmission on the radio.   Cn’t answer the question about maps etc.  I fly mostly local flight or small handheld GPS.

Fun airplane - alot of airplane for the money.  Have fun and fly safe.

Herb

I think I recall that open canopy had no restrictions in the original manual.
I do open canopy always when doing formation flight and have done lots of acro with the canopy opened, all of my takeoffs and crack opened for landing

Many thanks to Tiger Airshows, Dr Herb Coussons and Javier Carrasco for their in depth responses to my questions about open cockpit flying in a Yak 55.

Tried it for the first time last weekend  – what a great new experience!

Royden,
I am unable to find those airspeeds in the archives. Could you share them with me.
Thanks,
Dan Caldwell
