Hi All
I am the proud new owner of Europa XS Tri-gear kit A-101.
Today I was going through the kit and I found some unopened cans of this miracle glue.
The cans were manufactured in 2005 and are labelled with an expiry date 6 months later in early 2006.
In the perfect world I would just buy new adhesive but as this glue is hard to obtain (at a reasonable price) I'm considering using the glue I have.
The cans show no sign of corrosion and are unopened.
Does anyone know what the realistic shelf life of this product is? Alternatively if anyone knows of a source in New Zealand or Australia so I can minimise dangerous goods shipping charges that would be very helpful (I'm already in an email conversation with Huntsman in Australia). Â
Thanks
Graeme

From past discussion on this forum, I’d ignore the expiry date...I’d suggest opening the containers and determining whether or not crystals have formed…if they have, warm the Redux container in a pot of water on the stove, stirring until crystals have dissolved, then proceed w/ a test strip or two to determine current bond strength.
…just my thoughts on what I’d do…

Just keep in mind " When your at the start of the runway, about to power up, do you want that little niggle in the back of your mind saying should I have..........."
Just one of the things I keep in mind every time I go into my workshop. Just my thoughts

Thanks Fred, I appreciate the suggestions. Do you have any suggestions about how to test the bond strength?
Thanks spcialeffects for your input too, while the use of old glue is definitely a concern for me at least I am able to test and verify performance. The bigger concern for me is that I'm building from a kit that has had at least three previous owners. I will check their work as far as I can but there are some areas of the aircraft where I am unable to see what they have done.
Ultimately any aircraft is a collection of trade offs and compromises and this is just one of many. Hopefully Huntsman will come through on Monday with a reasonable price for 1.4kg of Araldite 420 and I can just buy it from them.

Graeme…I’ll stick my neck out and suggest the following:
I always kept all cut-outs and scraps of materials from trimming of moulded parts, etc. Find a couple of scraps of (say) 3 ply BID and bond them together w/ the Redux…using a suitable set up of leverage and grip, attempt to pull them apart…if the fiberglas fails before the Redux bond, I’d feel good to go.
But I would certainly invite anyone with real knowledge and experience in this area to step up and either take issue with or confirm my suggestion.

That was pretty much what I was thinking Fred. I don't have any cut-outs or scraps that I can use but I've got a lot of spare glass cloth and I can easily make some test samples. I'll do this once I've done a complete inventory of the work to date and after ordering the mod kits and possibly other parts I need from Europa.Â

Hi Graeme,
Seeing your ref to Australia and New Zealand I was just wondering where you are based.

Hi Bill
I am based in Wellington. I bought the kit from a guy in Auckland who imported it from USA about 10 years ago.
Regards
Graeme

Thanks Peter, I am already a member of SAANZ and the Wellington chapter of SAANZ.
I also attended the intro to home building course held recently.
Unfortunately there are no Europa builders I have been able to find near Wellington but there are a few that have built other composite aircraft.

Hi! Frank,
On a lighter note one of the more re-assuring things is to consider this
item as "bonding material" rather than "GLUE" !
