Can anyone tell me what the flow restrictors are for on the CJ main air system gear circuits? Obviously they restrict air, but whats the purpose? To prevent slamming? Are the actuators rated for a lower pressure than the overall system?
On that note. I'm looking at that nice color air schematic (attached) that I got from the list, and noticed something that's puzzling me. If you look at the drawing, there is 1 flow restrictor shared by all 3 gear for the Retract side. On the Extend side each gear leg has it's own restrictor. Note that on the main gear legs the restrictor prior to the shuttle valve, or NOT in the emergency circuit, but the nose gear has the restrictor AFTER the shuttle valve, or in BOTH the normal and emergency circuit.
I'm assuming this is a diagramming error..... if not, can someone explain.

You are correct. They restrict flowwhen in the circuit. Yes, they
prevent the gear from slamming. Restrictors have absolutely no affect on
the pressure. Only the flow. The actuators are not rated for a lower
pressure. If you were to remove them from the main gear and do a gear
retraction test, you will see quite a bit of difference in the speed of
the retraction/extension versus without the restrictor.

I don't know the answer to the question regarding the restrictor shown
on the schematic in the nose gear circuit after the shuttle valve.

All,
Dennis is, as per normal 100% correct.
For the correct placement of the restrictors see pages 281 and 282 in IPB #1.  See items #17, 33, and 40 (sub).  The Chinese call them "dampers", note that they have different part numbers this is because they all have different sized holes drilled in them.  Now see the schematic on page 279 in the same book to find the factory placement location of items #17, 33, and 40.

We carry the restrictors in stock, undrilled/blank if you need them.
It is possible, with a bit of tinkering to alter the hole size in the restrictors and modify the speed and order of gear retraction.  I saw one CJ which retracted exactly like a "std" aircraft in that all three gear hit the gear wells at exactly the same time.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Doug

Doug,

My parts manuals are in the hangar. Is the diagram that I attached incorrect, and the nose gear restrictor should be behind the diverter?
Thanks
Ernie

On this same topic, I removed the six air fittings from the rear gear handle and noticed that a flow restrictor fell to the floor of the cockpit. Which line did it come from? In the diagram I note a restrictor on the line that goes to the extend side of the gear actuators. Can someone please confirm?
Thanks, Gil
