Curious what the stock function of the Changeover Switch mounted under the glareshields, right hand side is? Can't find a description in basic manuals.
Russian nav and com radios and intercom are removed.

Thinking of re-purposing the switch to smoke system switch but want to make sure I won't lose any functions.

Thanks in davance.

This A/B changeover switch was used with the preconfigured ADF frequency pair settings (A & B) as selected by the cockpit ADF pair numerical rotary knob.

It was (is?) Russian practice to place NDBs at either end of a given runway, by knowing (in advance) the pair of NDB frequencies for your destination airfield runways this enabled a simple runway localiser function to be created.

By toggling the coaming A/B switch on approach, if there was no displacement of the ADF display needle against the runway heading, then you were aligned with the selected runway NDB pair.

If you've taken all the original comms/nav kit out then the toggle switch should be superfluous.

Hope this helps, Rob R.

When I was a copilot at PAA, (a million years ago) we'd see the NDB approaches Russia on our Jepp charts. It certainly was an inexpensive way to set up an runway approach. On some of the Russian approaches you could fly a complete pattern (4 NDBs). It was always my concern that the aircraft ADF needle could also point to any nearby TS, which I saw often enough to avoid them.

Thanks for the info of the A/B switch. I often imagined some poor Russian franticly dialing and re dialing NDB frequencies at the speed of the rubber bladed windshield defogger fan.

Thanks Rob, I suspected something like that or Intercom and the old Russian gear is all out, so Smoke System Switch it becomes.

Thanks!
