I disposed of my vacuum instruments before I got around to installing them, and have also sold the vacuum pump before I ever installed it.

I have now got my engine out of the dark box where it’s been hiding and hung it on the Europa (just for a trial fit to sort out wire and cable runs etc - haven’t got the firewall sorted out yet). Now that I can get a good look at it, I see there’s a spacer plate on the vacuum pump pad - see pictures:

However, as you can see in the 2nd picture the nuts that hold it don’t screw onto the studs far enough to secure the spacer before they become threadbound, so the spacer will be rattling around and the nuts won’t be secured. So, what should I do? Add another little piece of aluminium plate thick enough to allow the nuts to be done up? Remove the spacer, nuts and spring washers leaving the studs empty and the drive splines exposed (doesn’t sound quite right!)?

It appears from the Rotax illustrated parts catalogue that there is a plug which fits inside the gearbox aperture when the vacuum pump drive is not fitted, but obviously I’d have to do quite a bit of dismantling to use that.

Hi Rowland,
I removed my Vacuum Pump for a glass screen Instrument Panel last year.
What I did and as you say,
"Add another little piece of aluminium plate thick enough to allow the nuts
to be done up."
I sealed it with a gasket sealant and it covered the Vacuum Drive slot.

Cheers,
Tim

How about pulling off the spacer plate and using it as a pattern to make a solid plate of the same size and similar thickness with the same bolt holes. Then make a thin gasket to go between. You can use the cover and gasket over the spacer to close up the area. It would look nice and neat and keep crud out of the works.

Bob, Tim - thanks for the reassurance - I’ll go ahead with plan A.
