I poke around in really remote areas on my various trail bikes. On some, and
especially on my road bikes, Honda scooters (250cc and 600cc) I like to
monitor the charging system. Hate to have it quit way out there. I can no
longer count on my body to walk back in. Long years ago I was a crew leader
on a FS hot-shot crew. Now... things are different. Oh- yeah, charging... I
install a lil LED thingee that shows the state of charge. I would
immediately know if my alternator stopped working or something. These are
cheap and easy to install. They show several levels of charge from flat to a
red blinking state for over-charging. It goes through off, orange, green,
red blinking red and maybe another. It's orange when I turn the ignition on.
That shows the battery is good but isn't being charged. Once running, one
gets used to the solid green (around 13.5v - 14.5 IIRC) and if it ever were
to change it would grab my attention quickly.

George,
And where would we find this little marvel?

Here is one, much like mine, not exactly.
I bought my last one several years ago, still looking for that source in my records.

This has dual-range which is nice if you use a trolling motor. Mine doesn't have this. Think mine is smaller in dia..
$16.98 + $2.99
Picture from eBay, not mine.

For what it's worth, HFT has this on sale right now for $40. It's a bit
heavier than some batteries but I use a 20 AH SLA battery for my main
battery so a 17 AH backup would be just right for a back up.

The one on sale is a later model than this and also has some USB ports so
you can charge a phone as well. Might be nice if you got caught out and
found your phone was dead, too.

FWIW I got a “Cen-tech 4 i n 1 Portable Power Pack“ from HFT a year ago for about $50. It’s great but heavy. Has the small spotlight but also an air compressor, built-in; most convenient! I carry it in my car & most often its used to rescue broken=down motorists. Or at least their cars.Russ K
