The simple fact is that there is not sufficient metal in the standard Yak brake drums to absorb heat from a high-speed landing or a long taxi. Of course this is much more concern in an 18 T being far heavier, and less so in a 50, being lighter. We produced a small batch of much heavier drums, including cooling ribs which were far better in service, but of course not certified so we couldn't use them in Europe and, somehow, other projects intervened!
