Tried to start the FSII last week, the priming system was not priming, you can get an idea of how it is plumbed on this page: http://oh2fly.net/oldpoops/Fuel_tanks_storage.html

Primer bulb was not working, put in a new one and cut the old one in half with an X-acto knife. Very interesting: the inside was coming apart in strange ways. Note a couple little fragments of rubber right next to the ends where the check valves are. They are not a result of cutting the bulb apart, they were there and got discovered. Guaranteed to make the bulb not work right.
Don't remember how old this bulb is, but they obviously have a fairly short service life, probably ought to replace at annual.

Most bulbs are, as you describe, crap. I've had several that had to be taken apart from new in order to modify the check cage to secure the ball from falling out. And the bulb material will often disintegrate.

I look up these the same way I do toothbrushes. You know damned well there is a plastic bristle formulation that won't deform for years but the manufacturer prefers built-in obsolescence.

I put a small 7lb pressure metal 12v fuel pump in series between the filter and the stock fuel pump. A switch on the dash allows me to prime the system and then shut it off, but it will also run the engine if the stock fuel pump stops operating in case of flight emergency. I see no reason it can't take over if the stock check valve fails, or the stock pump or pulse line fails. I read that the fuel system is the number one cause of engine stoppage. Gasohol uses plant-based alcohol and it eats rubber. The pump I picked up at Autozone is made to run with gasohol, and doesn't restrict flow when shut off.Respectfully,

I'm a firm believer in auxiliary electric fuel pumps.

When you mention pulse line failure (I assume for a two stroke), I don't know how long that engine would run before it fails.  A pulse line failure would normally open the crank case to the atmosphere.

Anyone experienced a pulse line failure in flight?

Another reason for me to run premium neoprene fuel line, rather than plastic "ultralight" tubing.

Should have added the following to my comment below:

"I don't know how long the engine would run before it fails "with an auxiliary fuel pump".
