Grumpy,
I have one for my 6A if that is close enough.
I take it with me whenever I got some place to tie down.
Have not exposed it to heavy gusts - but the regular airport stuff is handled well.
The only deficiency that I can state is that it needs a bag to keep it from clanging around in the back.....maybe I'll call Bruce's custom covers and see if they'll sew something up.......

So you think it’s worth the cost? Pretty pricey, but then again 9 years of looking for a good, lightweight easy to install control lock has not been very fruitful….

I have no idea why I miss half of the posts these last few weeks. I actually
don’t even see the questions until someone replies.
Here is my review -

Since that review- I have been out in the desert where a multi had its
rudder smacking back and forth in 20-30kt gusts, while mine remained solid.
I was out in New Mexico last month and parked for a few days when I returned
my cover and overall aircraft was as I left it. Next to me was a Piper that
either had nothing or it failed. The owner was commenting on how he couldn’t
fly because the rudder broke in the thunderstorm that had past.
To Ralph's point- I leave mine behind the seat on the floor (carpeted)and
never have had an issue with it moving.
As my review states. It is a great product, I really like having it. My
wires are inside the stick so I have no issues with wire routing around
connector.

Pricey, yes - but I think it's worth it since it is a single item which when installed is in your way so you won't forget it......
I had to send mine back as it didn't fit right first time - I was asked to provide a couple of measurements and mine was adjusted, rewelded and re-anodized.....

There are cheaper options but I don’t think there are better options than
the Antisplat. I used a nice light setup another builder made for me and it
worked well for the rudder but the Antisplat covers every moving part so
nothing moves in a storm.
I think its worth it.

An essentially zero cost (assuming you want a tow bar anyway) option is to use the Bogart tow bar, modified with two tabs, as a gust lock. This has been posted before. I've used this with zero problems.

Me too. Weld two tubes about 1" long extending the bars and they fit in the holes in the rudder pedals.

Not doing this myself, I question the hassle of getting out for the tow bar,
which mine sits in the baggage area than moving the plane into place with a
tow bar, or even if not, than going back into the plane to put the bar on
the pedals if parking for a while in windy conditions, than having to do
this all in reverse- go into plane take bar out, move the plane, all in
hopes that there isnt any wind to bang the rudder while pulling the plane
into position to start.
Having a gust lock in the plane guarantees that if its windy, and it has
been a few times in the west coast, I have everything secured BEFORE getting
out of the plane, I also don’t need to go back in and put the tow bar in the
plane. I have seen first hand a person move a plane in windy conditions and
the rudder banging. The Antisplat is the seatbelt around the stick and
towbar on the pedals. Sure that works, but I would rather skip the hassle
and know when I get out that the rudder and ailerons are not moving
anywhere. Yes, I would agree its an investment but in my mind its worth it.
There is also the PVC route to resolve the securing the plane before getting
out concern if looking for an inexpensive option.
Just some feedback for those wondering if Anti-splat gust lock is worth the
investment, certainly not disagreeing with anyone who has a working and
different way to do this. I once had an cheaper solution as well and I am
simply happier for my "upgrade".

Hi
Since I have Paul Grimstad rudder pedals I wasn't sure if the "standard" options would work for me.
What I ended up doing was installing an eye bolt in an open AN3 hole in the u channel at the base of the firewall. I use that as an anchor point through which a bungee cord is used to pull both pedals forward. The end of the bungee is secured to one of the gear legs arms that is in the corner of the foot well.
I used this at KOSH and it seems to have worked quite well. I especially like that the bungee has some "give". I found one bungee was too loose but two held a nice tension.
For the elevators I just use another bungee wrapped around the seat to hold the stick back

Worked for a year unmodified, then worked even better in modified form for the past year.

I think I did see one of this design (PVC) fail at OSH this year. There was
quite a thunderstorm /windstorm that came through Friday night before the
show. I think the PVC snapped on the long part.

I have a destroyed rudder in my shop from a failed pvc gust lock. For short stops in non-stormy conditions, they may be fine, but please please please don't trust them over a weekend or any time there are going to be relatively high winds.

One of the first PVC units that I fabricated used a much smaller diameter PVC for the long pipe. I did not like the strength that it exhibited, so I used this larger dia. pipe.
I may do some destructive testing on an older prototype to see how much force it may take to snap it.

My modified (to fit my pedals) Gust Off gust lock broke in half in that storm. As a backup I had a pair of AirGizmos control locks, the one on the elevator came off. It had the older style cam, and they replaced it at the show to the new one, no charge.
Luckily the plane didn't get damaged at all.
Base velocity on RadarScope was showing 50-60 mph winds.

Ok, here's my 6cents.
Pic1: My standard for short stays
Pic2: Elevator bracket for long stays/windy conditions.

Pros:
Cost = almost nothing
Reliability = 100%
Weight = almost nothing
Space required = almost nothing
Cons:
You have to make them

I've seen various examples of failed rudder locks that used the rudder horns
and/or rudder cables. The common failure seemed to be not considering the
rudder's large leverage arm when applying force opposite of normal
operations (e.g. wind gusts). I ended up with this simple but effective
solution that takes advantage of this lever arm.
The line loops around the middle elevator hinge (make sure you use a Bowline
knot for this for easy removal). Once the line is in place I lock the
elevators up with the pilot seat belt - and then attach the padded angle on
the trailing edge of the rudder.
This has worked well for two airplanes over 13 years.
