Kolbers,
A month or so ago there was a lot of talk about antennas. No one mentioned “The Wonder-Whip”. I am hoping to use the “W-W” in my Kolbra. I have a copy of the instructions that I think can from the “list,” the date is August 29, 2011. It seems like it should be a user friendly antenna just made out of a piece of RG174 coaxial dipole antenna wire.
Does anyone recall this antenna, good or bad?

Got a link? Google just shows regular whip antennas.
Nothing magic about making a dipole from coax, but where would you mount a limp string on a Kolb?

Boyd Young had a solution for $5 and tlongo also had one very similar. Couldn’t find a link for Boyd’s but here is the link for tlongo:

this was the information from my old web page.... I used this antenna for 13, 14 years,,, it seemed to work ok... but last summer I replaced it with an inverted vertical mounted under the pilots seat... it is straight down for about 1/2 its length, then angles to the rear at about a 45 deg angle I do not have a picture,,, but it seems to work considerably better.
the text below is not 100 % clear on how it was mounted.... the coax went from the radio to just in front of the steel cage on the left side of the nose cone, the center conductor was originally taped on the inside of the nose cone up the left side then across the top. I later changed out the tape (because it kept falling off ) to some short one inch pieces of drinking straw siliconed to the inside of the nose cone every 4 inches or so. the braid was mounted across the bottom ( starting at the front left corner of the cage) and it angles back and to the right at near a 45 deg angle.. this position was chosen because it gave me the lowest swr’s
I do not know how this antenna compares to the wonder-whip. this information is worth what you paid. or not

Cheep Dipole Antenna

This is a picture of my $5.00 antenna. It consist of a bnc connector on a piece of rg 58 coax. To make the antenna cut 25 inches of the insulation from the end of the coax and pull the center conductor out through the braid. pull the braid tight and cut to the same length as the center conductor. On the first antenna I made I cut the braid to about one inch and crimped an eyelet on the end and bolted it to the frame where the nose fairing attaches to the frame. I used some clear packing tape and taped the center conductor to the side of the nose cone and across the top. After it was installed I used an antenna analyzer to check for the best swr and had to cut to match, I have been able to talk to another plane over 120 miles away, my radio is a sportys A 300 and puts out a 1 watt carrier, the signal report I recieved was that the signal strength was good but there was a bit of background noise. (wonder where that comes from in a KOLB). With the antenna pictured I left the braid intact and taped it across the bottom of the nose cone thus trying to eliminate some electrical noise from a direct connection to the cage. I have been very pleased with the results. when changing to noise canceling headsets the background noise was intolerable until I reduced the mike gain, I am very happy with the system. I used the first antenna for the ELT. and mounted it on the other side of the nose cone.
