Happy new year to you all.

I would appreciate any recommendations as to how to lift the fuselage off the ground, in order to have the wheels in the flying attitude to enable fitting of the wheel covers?

Thank you in anticipation.

Warm regards

Patrick

I borrowed long ram jacks and placed them just inboard of the main gear
legs. Far easier to put the wheel pants on without the wings in the way.

I was thinking of doing that and placing some 3/4" plywood under the fuse for support.

Warm regards.

I used around a 4 ' x10"  piece of hardwood with a piece of carpet between it and the fuse, and then a long stroke bottle jack to raise it.  Then I put car stands  under the hardwood plank while I worked on the pants.  Just be sure the whole thing is stable.  I did leave the nose wheel on the garage floor while I worked on the mains.

You might as well go ahead a fabricate a couple wing jack stands using the Harbor Freight long ram jacks. There are many examples on the Vans forum to follow or get ideas from. I made two for under $100. Some use the wing tie down point to jack, I use the wing spar box under the fuselage. I made 4" X 6" articulating pads for the rams that have a thick rubber padding to protect the paint. They come in handy anytime you need to do any brake or wheel maintenance in addition to setting up the initial wheel fairings installation.

Thanks Rick
This sounds like the way to go. I'll investigate sourcing the long stroke jacks.
I don't have wings attached.

Warm regards and thanks.

Are you able to send any pictures please David.
We don't have 'Harbour Freight' here downunder in Australia, however I'm sure that I can source something, albeit more than likely not as cheap.

David, that's an even better idea than my plank.  I think I will fabricate something for the top of the jack.

If you are looking for a minimalist approach, see this Precarious - Not

I used a single 'Harbor Freight' bottle jack to raise a side at a time - then some oak 1.5"x1.5" sticks I had laying around clamped to the spar stubs.   The nose and most of the weight is held by my engine hoist.

Given that the tail isn't installed and the engine is, there's not that much weight to support at the future CG if the engine is support on an engine hoist.

Assuming you have an engine hoist and any kind of jack, using a couple of sticks and c-clamps is pretty cost effective.  I worked up the nerve to take this approach by looking at other builders pictures.

Good luck putting on your pants.
