I have left this to last so that I can get at everything meantime.

Has anyone left a bigger opening that the "D" cut out?

I ask becasue I am concerned about getting at fuel pumps , pitch autopilot servo and electrical stuff in the rear fuselage

I thought maybe to cut the bulkhead along the angle, make matching flanges on floor sides and roof from bid and then bolt the whole thing together.  

Or is it better just to find a small assistant....

I made mine bigger!  At 250 pounds and 6' 2" I could not fit into the D.  So I made the whole rear panel removable.  I can send you some pictures if you would like them.

First, I am glad to see there are other properly sized people flying the Europa. At 255 lbs.  and 6 foot, I believe the Europa was designed by a team of elfs, dwarfs and hobbits. 



Getting in the back is a real pain - and don't forget the tail support - the feeling of the tail going to the floor as you are sliding through the infamous D hole is exciting. 



Use a wide board that fits over the tank and then crawl back on it (Bud Yearly hint number 756.)

I'm 6'5 and with the high top mod find my mono perfect even on long trips. Maybe the tallest Europa owner!

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, but I had to go to the hangar yesterday to take a picture.  I thought I had some pictures when I did the work.  I think I did the cut during the first condition inspection.  I found I just could not get into the back to check things out.  



I made the cut straight down from the "D" (F08) spacer or hat rack. If you look closely at the picture you can see the cut between the "D" spacer and the bottom panel  Then straight across the baggage then up to the "D" spacer.  I made the bottom cut 1 inch above the curve section on the bottom.  I then re-enforce the panel with three layers of 2" fiber-glass tape with 1 inch on the outside of the cut.  I laid the panel flat and let the resin dry then installed nutplates along the backside and the bottom of the cut.  



I later found the bottom flange cracked out because of my weight during the inspection.  I had to go back and re-enforce this section.  I then had to use a 1 inch pad or board to keep from lying on the flange.



If I did the work again I'd cut the curve so it would be flat and the screws and nut plates would be on the bottom of the floor and nothing would be sticking up.

 Bill Moreland here and I have recently purchased a  Europa XS and have been reading this matronics .com site ttying to find other owners close enough to me that we could possibly meet up occasionally at an airport or wherever to chat about these planes. Was wondering where you are located? I am in Bedford,Pa.  I also see that you are 6,5" and Wondering how you sqeezinto an Europa? You must have a mod that widens the cockpit a little Huh? And where would I find out about this? I am only 5,9" and find it quite snug. Would love it to hve more elbow room.

  Well if you can make sense out of this email I would welcome a call from you. Maybe just to give me an idea of how to find other local Europa owners and your experience with the Europa community.

That looks like it makes life much easier.  I see you're flying so obviously it hasn't affected the structure,

Is there any rule when you substitute a panel for a bonded structure in terms of fasteners per distance.

I still haven't installed the bulkhead and so have the opportunity to modify it on the bench as it were.  I suppose that I could simply make a single panel incorporan the D panel instead of the two that you have.

Hi Bill,Sorry, but not on your side of the Pond, I live in Portugal. A good bet is to join the Europa club, only a few bucks a year and as well as helping you get in touch with other Europa builder/flyers, will keep you updated as to whats happening. Bud Yearly is the leading authority State side. If you look on the Europa club website this will give you details on cockpit width increase(and how to contact Bud) as well as all the other mods, which will also help to see that your a/c is current with all the relevant required mods.

Mine is a high top with the cockpit width increase, with the longest logged flying hours in a day being 7 hours which is pushing it a bit comfort wise!

Trust your Europa is one of the ‘proper’ variants, i.e., a mono!!
