Yes it does. I have been told that the engine system and the charging system is different. Don't ask me to go into specifics. I do know that it keeps on running without a charge going to the battery.
I have ordered a replacement, be here Tuesday.

Kolbers:

The info below was obtained from Green Sky Adventures web site.  Seems the HKS has a single charge system.  If the alternator fails, better have a good battery.
The Rotax 912 uses two separate systems, one for charge and one for ignition.

Is it true: If the battery dies the engine will quit?
The HKS uses a DC CDI. This type of ignition allows a full advance curve, without which the engine would be very mediocre in most respects. It must have 12 volts DC from an outside source to start. Once running, a dead battery will not affect engine operation because the integral alternator will provide power for ignition. The concern, then becomes one of wiring. Output from the charging system needs to be on the line side of the circuit which powers ignition. This way, regardless of battery, cable, or master switch condition, primary power is uninterrupted. In the event of a charging system failure, ignition is dependent on battery.

Actually the one that I bought off Amazon was $104. with two day shipping. Might be more than I could get other places, but it all works out, and speed is more important to me.Larry

My S-14 arrived today...with the HKS-700E engine
Looking at the engine schematic...the 5 wire voltage reg does not have a wire that goes to the CDI boxes..! 3 wires are white and see the three Phase ac voltage... the Cdi boxes have  two wires coming from the accessory case and are likely magnetic pickups... 180 degs apart for the two cylinders or could be two pickups for each cyl.. one full adv and one starting and low rpm? ... If single coil they must be set to max advance and the CDI box adds the delay for starting and low rpm operation...?   To me...this means that a lot of motorcycle cdi's should work...?  Most scooters work similarly... 10 dollar cdi box beats whatever HKS wants... ..whether I would use a Chinese one???  Not likely...Smile  I have had two bail on my scooter..  Betting Yamaha has a reasonable replacement?
