To all Paradice City Volunteers,

Well the holidays are complete and it is once again time for the best group of volunteers at Sun-n-fun to step up and do what we do best, make Paradise City the place to be.
To update you from the end of Sun-n-fun 2015 I can report that we received high praises from Leadership. Not just to me one on one, but at the volunteer dinner on Sunday evening. Lites talked about all volunteer areas at SNF during his speech, and when he got to Paradise City he spoke excitedly and commended us on the job we did this year under adverse conditions (Dave), and emphatically stated that Paradise City was his new favorite place at Sun-n-fun. He spoke about how well the area looked, how well we managed Doolittle road, and praised how we took it upon ourselves to man and manage the yellow lot with great success. He further stated that we enjoyed a safe year in PC as well. He concluded with praise to our dear departed friend Dave Piper by stating that our success was an affirmation of his long time work. Lites again praised us during the debrief meeting weeks later with emphasis on the aerial photo regarding the appearance of the yellow lot.
Paradise City was spotlighted in an aviation magazines including a six page section and a centerfold featuring Powered Paragliders. Dan Johnson from LAMA also did a video interview with me about PC that was featured in their video magazine. I got to brag about PC, you all, our vendors, our emphasis on youth in PC, and of course the memory of our great friend Dave Piper.
Starting with the ground loop party, the debrief meeting, and continued communications all year long, the issues and challenges ahead are not immeasurable. Lakeland Linder Airport has honored their promise to completely revamp and lengthen our runway. It is not yet complete but well under way, and will be a full time legal and maintained runway year round prior to SNF 2016. From the east, the runway will move 100 feet to the west, and extend all the way through the current “clear zone” to the north/south walkway leading to general parking. For the event, the NOTAM will state that the runway will remain 1400 feet. This is to discourage larger aircraft from trying to land there.
Over where we normally house the food vendors a hanger is currently under construction. For SNF this hanger is slated to house all the small air show performers’ aircraft. This also means that during the airshow (while we are shut down) the airshow planes will be taking off
from our runway and will serve to save SNF significant funds in fuel and enhance the flow of the air show. This will have no negative impact on PC. We will have more folks in Paradise City because of the location of the hanger. This will be announced on the other side regularly. Because we are yielding the runway during the airshow I have agreed to allow the ride hoppers to operate out of PC during the air show only. They will operate on the north side till the show, then transition to PC and return to the north side after the Breitling Jet Team show finale each day. Both of these changes are possible due to the runway extension. This will allow ride hoppers significant more time to do business. Again this has no negative impact on PC.
We are adding a third 6-man cart this year, which will be dedicated solely to the yellow lot to shuttle folks parking in distant parking places. The other two will continue to shuttle people back and forth from PC to the Core area.
I am currently working with Greg Gibson and a great new Paradise City Sponsor who is very interested in sponsoring two sets of bleachers to be placed at the fence line by the runway in PC. I am very excited about this improvement, as I have observed the need for this for a few years now.
We will once again have the temporary elevated tower sponsored by Miami Dade College, back in PC. I am lobbying for more small vendors (ice cream, corn, drinks and yes Amish doughnuts), we will see how that goes. We are growing and our infrastructure needs to accommodate the growth. The added vendors will assist in guests spending longer periods of time in PC. We are working with the Gift Shop to have a satellite store in Paradise City, and this was not my doing. They contacted me through Bonnie Perkins, this is a great sign of things to come. We are happening.
At Sebring Expo last week I was asked by a board member to speak to the Association representing Gyrocopters, which I agreed to do. Hopefully this will generate more Gyro vendors in our area. I am told that Chopper-Town is being revived in a very limited capacity but the vendors will remain in PC.
We have lobbied, begged and connived for some infrastructure improvements, the main one being a permanent power hub with a removable distribution panel to service headquarters, the briefing tent, the announcers stand, and the temporary tower. This is not yet committed but we are working hard to make it happen, if not for this year, then for next. This will cut the costs for all those generator rentals, fuel costs, and NOISE for vendors, our PC visitors, and us. The consensus is that the need is justified but financing is as always a compelling factor. Keep your fingers crossed.
Greg Gibson has assured us that we will have a better shower trailer this year. Let’s just say that I relayed our discontent with great conviction. I’m convinced you all can translate that. He was in full agreement that last year’s shower was completely unacceptable.
Your Directors and I would love to hear your suggestions for improvements to this year’s event. You can do this by emailing Barbara at barbaraf(at)fha.org (barbaraf(at)fha.org%20). Please put “Suggestions” in the subject

How much are you willing to pay for a 3d party guide in Anchorage area?

Try a touring service in Anchorage. The place is full of them. They love to see "cheechacos" (green horn, tender foot) from the Lower 48.

To change the subject more towards aviation and little airplanes, who is going to Sun and Fun, 5 through 10 April, this year?

I haven't missed Sun and Fun since the I went to my first one, the month my Ultrastar kit arrived, in March 1984. Three months later I had made my first fixed wing flight as a solo pilot. Never knew what adventure that little airplane would start. While I was building the US, my dream was to fly around the hay fields and local airport. I was to be happy doing that to satisfy my aviation cravings. Never thought of flying cross country. However, two weeks after I made the first flight I was on my way from Titus, Alabama, to Tallahassee, Florida, for my first "long" cross country flight, 500 sm round trip. Two years later I flew to Miami, Florida, 1500 sm round trip in my FS. Then my cross country flights started snow balling.

My last cross country flight was to Sun and Fun 2015, and the one before that was a flight to Monument Valley, Utah, and The Rock House, near Burns Junction, Oregon, in Sep 2014. I was 75 at the time. I'm considering doing another flight in the MKIII to the Rock House this year. Don't have any specific plans yet, and it may not materialize. Will have to wait and see how me and the airplane do between now and time to fly. My biggest problem flying 24.0 hours in 4 days is noise. I can tolerate the wind and turbulence pretty good, even though I don't like to, but the high noise level really wears me down flying 6.0 hours a day. It is about time to update my WARP Drive Prop. The old one has well over 1,000.0 hours on it. It is 71" long. I am going to drop to a 68" prop to try to reduce prop noise. May even pick up a little cruise speed. John Williamson flew with a Rotax 912uls and 68" Warp Drive Prop on his Kolbra, which performed extremely well.

Long cross country flights in a slow, noisy, small airplane, are made more doable if the pilot is in good shape mentally and physically. I've been working on the physical side since the first of the year. Upgrading the mental side is probably not feasible. We'll see what falls out as the year progresses.

Have fun and fly safely,

I have not been able to fly to Alaska like John, still dreaming of that.
I did get a chance to ride the 11,000 miles from Phoenix AZ to Alaska and back.
It is still probably one of the nicest vacations I have ever had.

Like John did, I dry camped most of the way. There are numerous camping grounds along the Al-Can Hwy that have showers and laundry if you need that.
I prefer to camp with the bears and moose.
I did the trip in late June and it took 20 days.
