Z-1 Magneto Wiring Question

I am wiring my magneto's according to the set-up in the Z-1 diagram.
 
I have a phobia about leaving the magneto's on and would like to have some type of sensor to indicate whether the magneto's are on by either a flashing warning light or buzzer but cannot see how to wire it into the set-up as detailed on Z-1 
 
All ideas welcome

Having some fear about hot mags can be a healthy thing... BUT.

Connecting electronic CRAP to the P-lead can easily lead to an in-flight power failure with accompanying forced landing; which is much more dangerous than a hot mag. DON'T DO IT.

I don't know what type of voltages/pulses appear at the magneto P-lead when the mag is operating or whether it is possible to rig some sort of indicator; but even if you should be successful, a component failure could easily ground out your magneto in flight.

I share your concern about hot mags and resolve my problem by using a shutdown checklist (key out + ign sw off) AND by TOUCHING the P-leads with my finger every time the upper cowl is removed. Touching helps me remember that I looked for an intact connection. Occasionally, shut the engine down at idle by moving the ignition switch to off. This will verify integrity of all wiring and the switch.

If you use toggles instead of the high $ key switch, you could just use a multipole switch. A DPDT switch for each mag would allow mag control on one set of terminals and an indicator on the other. Mags 'on' would be on the open pair of terminals and the indicator would be driven through the pair that's closed. Flipping the switch to Mags 'off' would close the mags terminals and open the indicator control. But... you then need a way to make the indicator circuit 'hot' only when the master is off. You can do that with a small relay that's normally closed (meaning that Master ON would drive the relay contacts open). Lots of monkey motion, but doable if that's what floats your boat. Smile

Actually, Mike...with a DPDT switch, the two poles could be wired so when they are both closed at the same time...one would ground the P-lead, and the other would connect the indicator to power to turn it on...The mag would be grounded and off, and the indicator would be on, indicating "Mag Off".

It seems like both of these DPDT solutions are providing an indication not exactly of "Mag off" but rather "Mag switch off."  This would be in addition to the already-provided visual indication of the switch handle being in the down position.

DPDT switches are the way to go. One set of contacts for the magneto's themselves, the other set of contacts to the buzzer/indicator. You can put the left and right set of indicator contacts in parallel so the indicator lights when either of the magneto's is still on.

Well, yeah, but the only real indicator of mags off is to go out & pull the prop through with fuel in the cylinders. Smile

My description gives an indication of 'mags on', with everything else in the plane 'off'. My assumption was that he wants an extra highly noticeable reminder of a hot condition when he's walking away from the plane.

BTW, isn't it going to be fun to parse this conversation for someone who comes in at the end, and tries to sort out the posting order?
