When pushing start button, all I got was whoosh of air and no propeller movement. Heard air leaking, I think from behind dash. Any ideas?

Pull the prop through a few blades and try again.

Air start valve is tits. Get a new one from Doug Sapp. It is on the inside firewall at about the level of your left big toe. If you have a YAK. 52. A pain in the ass to change.

Agree with Ernie. But if you heard the rush of air on pressing the start button the air start is failing. Did you hear a pop when the air start was engaged? If not the solenoid is failing.

Could be a blown air distributor check valve located on the compression cylinder; I had one so corroded it broke in half and was hanging on by the safety wire. There are 9 of course. Similar symptom you described.

My 55 does something similar. The starter button is real springy, and soft. When I press on it, with the master switch off, it makes a faint hissing sound. It is an air valve, and an electrical switch as well, correct?John B

It's an air solenoid, and electrically actuated air valve. It is very common however for the air distributor to get caught "in between" cylinders for lack of a better description, thereby venting air out an exhaust or intake valve. Pulling the prop through a little usually corrects the issue. If it happens often then you need to look at the distributor timing, which I have never done, but I understand it to be magic.

Just low on air. Fill up the tank.
