I did an article on the Start Valve in the Red Alert a few years back. Archive copies are available on the RedStar web site. Basically, a common problem is rust and "snot" in the air system. Rust is from the input side. On the Nanchang, the Input side is mounted down, where water tends to gather where the steel parts are.
Rust is indicated by a brownish stain on the firewall near the exhaust holes in the middle. During the condition inspection, I remove the input B-nut and squirt some WD-40 into the line and re-attach the nut. Eventually, disassembly and cleaning and replacement of O-ringsĀ is called for. By keeping a spare, I always have one ready to go.
I believe Doug stocks some parts for it but my memory fails in my "golden years". Generally the solenoid top half is OK. Low air pressure and and a weak battery can also cause the "whooshing" sound.
One way to test when it fails to start from the cockpit is to get out and "pop" the lever. Mags OFF of course and stand clear of the prop.

Yes, that was a great article Craig. Right on the money.
In the interest of safety, I would point out one more thing for the Yak 52 owners. Remember, we start the Yak 52 with the mag switch off (as Craig mentions for the CJ in his posting). So before you attempt to use the little lever on the side of the air start valve to "test" it on the Yak 52, please be absolutely certain you have the BATTERY and IGNITION switches turned OFF, or the engine may fire via the starting coil/shower of sparks.
