I know by the previous post from Gary about shutting the list down that there must be someone out there other than me receiving the posts here, so thought I should put something in play. Instead of waiting for my next trip to KAUN, I'll ask some post painting questions so perhaps everyone may benefit. Here is the first.
Before painting I bought new canopy seals from Fletchair and gave them to the paint shop. Unfortunately they did not quite know what to do with black one (which should go on the canopy) but did install the white one on the fuselage. Then when the canopy would not close the last 6 inches or so, they removed the white one and trimmed the plastic piece where it attaches. Now I have them both and only a smashed black rubber seal remains on the canopy itself.
I understand some people have applied a strip of felt at the back of the canopy instead of the factory seals. Should I put in the new black and white seals, put a felt strip on the canopy or just say the heck with it and let Gary fix it when we change the windshield in a month or so?

I am also interested in the replies, as I recently bought the white fuselage to canopy seal for my Tiger. The black one (canopy to fuselage) seemed to be in pretty good condition with no looseness or rattling of the canopy. Haven't installed the white one yet, but I believe it is required as it is more a air and water seal???

The plastic white seal is useless. It will deteriorate in a couple of years and drag on the fuselage. A felt seal is better. It will last about 5-10 years.

That makes sense and is what Ken demonstrated at his wrench bending weekend in Phoenix. So just get a roll of white felt and apply it at the back edge of the canopy. Do you have reccomendations based on experience for width and thickness for the best seal?

Thanks for the info Discover:
I have always used Wool Weather Stripping from the Aviation Aisle at Lowes. It does not have the self-stick backing so you then have to move down to the Aviation Floor Covering Aisle and pick up Double Sided Carpet Tape.Â
Get the one that has the fiber reinforcement, it is stronger and easier to work with. The job can be done without removing the canopy. And the carpet tape allows for total coverage of the area. The NON-Sticky Backed wool weather striping is much more flexible for side-to-side adjustments when placing it down. I mention this because the canopy has compound curves that must be matched for a flat lay-up. This is what I have found to be the Least Expensive and Easiest to do.
McMaster Carr is a great company for the hard to find items, but they CHARGE for their convenience.
