|
|
Hi all,
Yesterday the bungee cord of my nose-gear broke and I need to order a new one. A long search on this forum did not yield an answer to what length I will need to order. Can anyone please tell me?
While trying to figure out what exactly I will need to order, I noticed that the LAS Aerospace site (see: https://www.lasaero.com/site/products/article?id=A01J6VQML) mentions "Standard Type" and "Strong Type". Which of these types does the Europa Trigear ask for?
I already found out that I will be needing the 12mm diameter one.
If anyone has any tips/suggestions on how to most conveniently put a new bungee on a flying aircraft, please chime in
(my first phone call will be to Europa to find out if they have it on stock and order with them. My questions around required length an 'type' are "Plan B", in case Europe cannot supply immediately. Either case, tips/suggestions to have a convenient install are appreciated)
Note: inspection showed that the breakage occurred due to chafing, I found another spot where chafing occurred but that spot did hold up. Why this chafing occurred needs to be investigated...
The bungee gave way while I was taxiiing at very low speed and fortunately no further damage was done, the safety cable performed as designed...

Marcel,
I agree with Kevin. Upgrade to the springs if at all possible.

Thanks Kevin, I will move to springs next winter. For now I will just be replacing the bungee.

Hi Marcel,
I have just removed the bungee from my Tri-Gear, and upgraded to the springs. It has never been used, as my aircraft is part built. I don't know when it was fitted (the build was started in 1999 by the original owner!), or if it is time critical, but you are welcome to the bungee, for the cost of the postage. If you would like it, please PM me with your address.
Regards

Replacing the bungees with springs is a job I have planned for next winter, for now I will be putting on a new bungee. Main reason is that the stop tube is off-centre which I feel needs to be rectified first (as described in the appendix of Mod 71). Putting on a new bungee took some fiddling but I got it done.
Now comes the 'fun part' for which I am seeking advise:
On p. 29T-13 of the build manual there are 3 pictures illustrating the way the bungee should be 'routed' through the nose gear mounting frame. These images show a routing over the top horizontal tube.
On the next page (29T-14) there is an illustration that shows a different routing: the bungee is routed over the middle tube and then straight down again.
I had to route the bungee as shown on page 29T-14 (around bottom tube and middle tube) because I have insufficient clearance between top tube and firewall (1-2.5 mm maximum, by far not enough to squeeze the bungee through).
This leads to a few questions:
1. Which of the two routings is the intended/recommended one?
2. I found I had to stretch the bungee to appr. 225% (instead of the 175% mentioned in the build manual) to get the minimum 150kg force to get the stop off the middle tube (this leads me to believe that the recommended routing is over the top tube); will this extended stretching cause degradation of the bungee or it's expected lifespan?
3. What is the effect of having less length of bungee as compared to when routing it over the top tube? Any way to counter/minimize negative effects, f.i. by adding a second loop of -say- 4 loops around the existing 7 loops? (if this is at all possible, would this second loop not 'cut' into the first one, hence causing other problems?)
I am having trouble assessing how my install will hold, any advise from the forum would be highly appreciated.
