Recently I visited Bud and very instructive it was too, thanks Bud.  I recommend it.
For the spring conversion the factory says that the springs rub against the upright (the upright that has the bump stop on the top against the frame)  on the nose gear leg assembly and therefore you have to modify the nose gear upright or get a new nose gear assembly.  Bud said not to worry about that and indeed I saw a plane in his shop in which the springs were contacting the upright.
What is the general experience?  Do I need to modify nose gear or is it just the UK CAA being obsessive?

many thanks Will

Hi william,
I fitted the springs in 2009 and have had no problems with them. the only thing I do at each annual is to grease top and bottom hooks.

Hi William,

Nothing to do with the UK CAA or the LAA being obsessive.  The LAA standard mod was originally developed by Ian Rickard when he was the Europa Club Mods expert.  When the first few aircraft were modified (including mine) we discovered that some of the nose legs had uprights that were not at right angles to the pivot.  This caused one of the springs to foul the upright very badly.  The fix was to cut off the upright, replace it with a smaller diameter tube and weld it back in an upright position. This fix was approved by the LAA and, I think, subsequently adopted by Europa Ltd.

Regards

Brian Davies

Ah....thanks.
Is there any way one can check this?
Or is it critical to mod the nose gear leg with a smaller tube on the upright?

No problems, a small amount of grease on the hook contact points.

Hi Will,

There is a very good write up of the issue and the action to be taken in the appendix to Mod 71 on the Europa factory website.  The misaligned tubes were up to 6mm out of vertical so it should, I think, be possible to check with a set square prior to starting the mod.  It sounds serious but I don’t think it is a major issue.

To supplement Mod 71, I have found an updated drawing (attached) that shows how the down-stop tube was modified to clear the springs. It clearly shows the weldment details but unfortunately has no dimensions.
