Good day,

does anyone have a lead on an oil cooler inlet plug for the wing root.Â  Are they commercially available or are people handcrafting their own.Â  Doug is out of stock.

Bruce's covers sells them and will put your reg number on them ; $40 usd a few years ago.  www.aircraftcovers.com , 408-738-3959.

Phil, as you suggested, here's my reply to all...



  

  Do you mean the oval hole that inducts air at the wing root?  If so, why not manufacture your own using any sort of material.  I used and old "For Sale" sign; cut out the oval, painted it red, glued a "Remove Before Flight" streamer onto it.  But there's more to the story...

  

 I use the oval I described because I installed a wire mesh.  Before the wire mesh was installed, I used a stuffed toy dog with the "Remove Before Flight" streamer attached because it looked cool (at least to me).  The stuffed dog was of course a Chinese Pug... fitting I thought.  Anyway, I attended a Fly-In one summer day and on the taxi out and flight back kept hearing a "clanking" sound from what I thought was the back seat.  Drove me crazy chasing it over the next few flights.  Then, while washing the airplane a couple weeks later, I sprayed water down the oil cooler inlet and heard that "clanking" sound.  Since you can't really see down there, I brought out the shop vacuum and sucked out an empty coke can.  That's why and when I decided to go with the wire mesh.  Easy to install just by pulling the cover off and placing the mesh over the hole and re-installing the cover panel. 

  

 In the winter months, I install a half oval in the hole to reduce the amount of inducted air through the cooler during flight helping to keep the oil temps up.  Works OK, but I wish I had the capability to dial up or down the air induction as opposed to just air exhaust.

All I have is a wire mesh. In the winter, I use a piece of duct tape. A lot of times it's cold in the morning when I launch but by the afternoon it's hot. It's easy to put the duct tape off and on as necessary. One day someone is going to design an adjustable inlet and make some fuel and parts money. As we all know closing the exit door of the oil cool duct isn't very effective. You have got to block it from the front. Greg,I stock the Chinese winterization kit which consists of a movable door which installs in the oil cooler duct opening.Â  It allows you to open the slide door open for more cooling or slide it shut for less.

Can you move the slider from the cockpit durning flight?? I'm not familiar with the kit. Is it in the parts manuals?? I love pictures. I recently did a little work on a friend's CJ and noticed through the Oil Cooler outlet (at the underbelly) that wasps or hornets had nested in the air passages in the Oil Cooler almost completely closing off the airflow. Now this was not visible from the inlet where most of us carry out our daily inspection. There had always been a plug in the inlet and these pesky critters had sneaked in through the "Back Door"



So if you're going to plug the oil cooler inlet don't forget to make a plug for the outlet also. I made mine from a block of foam rubber and glued in a red tag so I don't forget it during my pre-flight inspection.
