I may be looking at a kolb in the Houston area. Any input on how much and what corrosion might be a factor in that close -to-salt water location?
Anyone in that area with  kolb maintenance experience who would be willing to provide a second opinion for a fee?
Many thanks

Peter

I flew my Firestar about 25 miles from the Gulf for years and never had a bit of corrosion from salt.  The usual spot rust on the steel parts, of course.

It will depend on A) Were the wings and tail alodined and primered with epoxy? B) Were grommets installed in the cloth so that water vapor could get out? C) The kind of rivets used. The early Kolbs used very thin wall tubing and used regular steel pop rivets rather than SS. D) Was the fuselage cage painted or powder coated? If the cage is white and you see rust colored stains all around it's probably powder coated. If you use AC 43.13 as a guide you'll have to sand to bare metal and restore the finish after priming. I like to use epoxy for this very reason. The picture is of the interior of a Firestar 1 wing which had no grommets and poor priming of the parts before assembly. It also used the regular steel rivets. It was from Pennsylvania and had this kind of corrosion throughout the wings and tail. Not good.
Good Luck.
