Roland,
You forgot the first step, lower you IQ to a 2.  Don't over think this, is what I tell clients.  Seal the duct, smooth the inlet curve and do not block the exit with poor fiberglass trimming, flaps or other stuff.

Just block or train the air in the duct.  Seal around the duct to cowl sides, under the coolers, and between them from ANY exit path other than through the coolers.

The pain of a fixed exit is, it is a compromise.  Not quite good enough for some ground ops or high powered climbs and over cool at cruise.  A moveable cowl flap is ideal.  Balancing oil and coolant temps depends on engine type, power settings and speed.  Ideally, a dual set of cowl flaps and inlets (oil and coolant) would be ideal.  On a fixed cowl, one must experiment with blocking the cooler face of the excessively cool fluid, change climb speeds, or in extreme cases power settings.

Supplied oil coolers were sized for the 914, and seasonal adjustments have to be made between summer and winter as Jim and Heather have done.  Non stock coolers achieve non standard results.

Ground cooling requires cowl suction to create a differential pressure across the coolers.

For ground cooling, on a fixed pitch cruise prop, increase ground RPM a bit.  On constant speed, increase pitch (coursen the prop) and increase ground RPM speed.

So, on the Europa stock cowl ground cooling is not a big problem, climb temps get a bit high, cruise temps get a bit cool.  Again, it's a compromise and as you found out, but liveable.  Ducting is never plug and play.  If any manufacturer says it is, they are lying.  I've built RVs, Zeniths, and Europas with stock engines and aftermarket auto conversions.  All of them took massive tweaking and attention to detail.  I just spent about 4 hours with some Florida RV owners who can't make it to the end of the runway due to ground cooling.  Each of their planes were stock, but on inspection were significantly different.

The ideal engine cooling solutions just take time, talent and MONEY.

Thank you for sticking to solving your issues by using the resources of the list.  Well done.

Bud,

no plug&play indeed. And I also fully agree, that a compromise has to be found (ideally the best one) with a fix setup.

I'm just happy, that I finally (after >5 years of ownership) managed to find a good compromise for me, although I did many things unconventionally and even some different to your suggestions Wink . I have now a good basis for further little improvements - if one day I ever should have the feeling that I miss tinkering (at the moment I write this, I cannot imagine it).

Happy landings

Just make one change at a time Roland, then measure and see if it works.
Very tempting to install more than one good idea while on the job.
