Started to build the new Firefly cage yesterday. First you take what's left of your Firestar cage and cut away the bent pieces that are in the way, then you heat and mash what's left back into an approximate shape and trace it on the wood so you will have the right dimensions for your tubing where it runs from the lift strut fittings to the front spar carry through.
Once you have that, you can figure out where the new landing gear A-frame (from Kolb) will go, align some tubing in your makeshift jig, and do a little welding.
We repaired the Firefly motormount tube & spar carry through piece we got from Herb & now it is tack welded to those fuselage tubes.
This afternoon I will cut the rear upper fuselage section away from the Firestar rear spar carry through, straighten the tubes as they are only bent a very slight amount, and grind away the excess metal, then that section can be tack welded to the Firefly rear spar carry through.
None of the pictures made it through...Attachments are not being attached?

Why are you building a Firefly cage for a Firestar airframe?

Because I want a Part 103 legal machine, and by combining the 1985 wings & tail with the Firefly cage, what I will be building is to all intents and purposes a long winged Firefly. Talked it over with Bryan ahead of time and he said to go for it.

That's right, it even says Experimental on the side of the airplane.

Not on mine, maybe you are thinking of a different Firestar?

Still reconstructing our fuselage cage from part of a Firestar 1 and an early Firefly, to get it to be what we think a typical Firefly cage is supposed to look like. So far we are quite satisfied, but - can anyone post or pm me some pictures of the cage interior showing the various pulleys and how the elevator and rudder cables align and go through them? If you email them it is thegreybaron(at)charterdotnet
Thanks!

Stuart; not only does it help, but for the last 3 weeks my laptop has lived on the work bench in the shop, with the screen full of your pictures, thanks so much. It is just some of the details, and trying to sort out the differences between an original FS and an early model FF, and there are a couple things that are not obvious.
However, it is about to get easier; my buddy Dave that is the other half owner in this with me said "Why don't we take the Stingsport and fly up to London, Kentucky next week and see how Kolb is currently doing them? We can be there in an hour"
Sounds like a fine plan. So disregard me asking the listers to post pictures; I'll be able to take my own.

Cool, that will be a fun trip. Say hi to the gang for me.
If you ever need any particular pictures or measurements, just let me know.
Serenity is currently sitting in my driveway (inside the portable hangar of
course). I would be happy to help and it is only a few steps away.
