After the last time I flew, I opened the snot valve and instead of the gunk blowing out it dribbled out. Plane makes pressure and everything else is operating normally. What do I need to clean/fix?

From someone who's been down this road so many times they named the street after me...you said the system seems to be operating normally other than the snot valve? So if your gauges are registering air pressure regeneration, the compressor is doing its job. The snot valve can be finicky in that it can easily develop reasons to incompletely close - either from basic wear & tear to needle valve obstructions to just accidentally being left partially open. If this were the case, there could still be enough closure to build pressure but just enough seepage to continuously clear the valve. Whatever the case, ripping the system apart is a pain. The 3' tall line workers with the 11" fingers that built these planes musta smirked every day when pondering we Westerners trying to dig into the many dark nooks & crannies with our sausage digits. I would highly suggest you start with the simplest options in your trial / elimination process before cutting too much safety wire. Always happy to pass on what I've learned here, but far from the level of the masters like Dennis, Jill and Doug.

Remove the snot bottle from the firewall; remove the valve assembly from the bottle and flush it out through all 3 openings with solvent or avgas. When it runs out clean, air dry it out, then reinstall and test the system.

I wound up cleaning and rebuilding the check valve on the compressor and cleaning the snot bottle/valve. The check valve was fine, not sticking and operating fine. However, after removing the bottle and soaking it in gas there was an incredible amount of sludge that came out of it. Once the gas ran clean thru the bottle and out the valve I put it back on and it works perfectly. Something that I should consider doing every other annual or some number of operating hours.

Hope this helps others on the list.

Craig

Thanks Craig,
I'd been grounded all this summer due to that issue

Many people ignore the ant bottle when their airplane has a problem building air pressure. Good idea to flush it out every couple of years.

Highly recommend replacing both deposit filters with swagelok SS valve. It replaces the corrosion prone lower section. Less than $75 each and easy to do. Wish I had known about it 9 years ago cause it can mitigate one of the entry points of corrosion in the pneumatic system. Should be an article about the mod in next Red Alert mag.
I have a PP presentation on the mod I can email to you if you like. Contact me at hkgibby(at)yahoo.com if interested.

Apple I-phone auto-corrected "snot" bottle to "ant" bottle. Sorry everyone.
