Snot Valve Not Snotting...

Posted: Tue Aug 02, 2016 6:20 am Post subject: Snot Valve Not Snotting...

After the last time I flew, I opened the snot valve and instead of the gunk blowing out it dribbled out.  Plane makes pressure and everything else is operating normally.  What do I need to clean/fix?

I would highly suggest you start with the simplest options in your trial / elimination process before cutting too much safety wire. Remove the snot bottle from the firewall; remove the valve assembly from the bottle and flush it out through all 3 openings with solvent or avgas.  When it runs out clean, air dry it out, then reinstall and test the system.

I wound up cleaning and rebuilding the check valve on the compressor and cleaning the snot bottle/valve.  The check valve was fine, not sticking and operating fine.  However, after removing the bottle and soaking it in gas there was an incredible amount of sludge that came out of it.  Once the gas ran clean thru the bottle and out the valve I put it back on and it works perfectly.  Something that I should consider doing every other annual or some number of operating hours.

Many people ignore the ant bottle when their airplane has a problem building air pressure. Good idea to flush it out every couple of years.

Highly recommend replacing both deposit filters with swagelok SS valve.  It replaces the corrosion prone lower section.  Less than $75 each and easy to do.  Wish I had known about it 9 years ago cause it can mitigate one of the entry points of corrosion in the pneumatic system.  Should be an article about the mod in next Red Alert mag.

I was looking in my manual for the ANT bottle.  I thought I had missed something.
