Dear all
Would be very pleased, if you could help me with my cooling issue on the ground by an XS with a 914UL.
I opened another topic, because I didn't build my XS by myself and didn't understand every post in the other
topic. (May it's because of my english knowledge) Another thing is that I have almost no knowledge about
fluid dynamics, therefore I created a picture documentation of my engine bay and list up three ideas which I had.
The ideas are at the end of the documentation. I hope it's helping to explain me some possible solutions.
I'm searching for a solution which is easy to create, because I didn't learn how to work with glass fiber till now.
My CHT is getting high very fast, but only on the ground. On an short airfield, it is even not possible to start after
a quick run up, because the temperature is already around 130°C. It occurs (at least) if the OAT is above 20 to 25°C,
which is quite common in Switzerland (homebase LSZK). The solution which I'm looking for should also work above 30°C.

Go to http://contrails.free.fr/engine_aerodyn_radia.php which is in French. Gilles Thesee who did the design work for this for a Rotax 914 lives nearby in Grenoble. The article gives a good indication of what is required to keep an engine cool. I use the same system on my Rotax 914 powered DynAero MCR-4S.

We would be pleased to discuss your problem. There are solutions.
Considering the design of your cowling and the (air inlets) holes in it, it is easy to get a notable improvement. Getting the most efficient cooling while reducing cooling drag would unfortunately involve more drastic mods in the cowling.

Hi Marcel,
as you know, I had the very same problem with my Trigear (same engine), however not that extreme (I didn't have to shut down but came close to the CHT-limit on the ground in summer - never when flying). Like you, I didn't build my Europa myself but bought it second hand for the very same reason of lacking knowledge and skills.
If you go to the appropriate thread (a few weeks ago), you can read, what I did on my aircraft modifying the standard XS-cowling without too much effort. However I don't know, if my measures are applicable also to the Monowheel.
I can now also run my engine for extended times on the ground in high temperatures >30°C. Under no conditions do I experience any cooling problems in the air.
For sure I would accept Gilles offer to help you with the cooling issues! Good luck!

The prop on the MCR with a very wide chord might also play a role here. It's completely different to the Warp Drive blades.

Yes it might play a role, but only to a limited extent. Peter's prop is different from our two bladed MT which has an efficient airfoil up to the blade roots.
With a proper radiator duct, you get some cooling even with the engine stopped and the nose into a light breeze.
Rapid overheating on the ground might be an indication that no air is getting into the radiators core.

Hi Marcel,
It looks like the air can go around the coolers. Here is a photo of how we use aluminum tape, rubber and weatherstripping to seal the gaps so the air has to go through the radiators. That might be your first step. It does not require fiberglass work and is easy to do.
It is hard to tell from your photo, but if the builder did not smooth the cowl entrance to the coolers, the air coming in will be disturbed, so that is another item to check.
We also recently added a cowl flap, copied from Erich Trombley, which has reduced cooling drag.

I'll start to close all gaps around the radiators and then check out the improvement, before doing some more improvements.
Probably I'll come later back to you, especially to Gilles, Jim & Heather for some detail questions.
