I have found the sight gauge to be almost completely unreliable in my classic monowheel. The only way I can know the fuel state is to slowly fill to the top of the filler and set the totalizer to 18 gallons.
I consult the sight gauge periodically during the flight, chiefly for entertainment value and to ensure there is indeed some fuel remaining. Often, an hour or two into the flight, the gauge will suddenly show a quantity in agreement with the totalizer.
Yes, I know of the vent problems of the monos, but even with purging them on the ground they seem to have more air bubbles introduced during taxi and climbout.
The diagonal stripes do work a treat, however.

Hi Martin,

Might I suggest another solution. The standard sight gauges for the
water level in boilers use a background with angled black and white
stripes. Due to refraction, where there is liquid the stripes are
reversed which makes it very easy to see the level.

I poked around on Google Images and found one example on a steam
locomotive. Simple, effective, cheap and it will work with gasoline. See
below.

Does anyone know where I can find a red float ball I can install in the sight gauge
fuel line?

Dear all,

Thank you very much for your help.
I'll start to close all gaps around the radiators and then check out the improvement,
before doing some more improvements.
Probably I'll come later back to you, especially to Gilles, Jim & Heather for some
detail questions.

Thanks again for the great support!

Wish you all the best.

Greetings from Switzerland
Marcel

Hi John, Martin.

This idea can be found on page 3-4 of the build manual.

No need to reinvent it

I don't run the sight gauge down near the foot wells, instead I run it up the center tunnel on up on the passenger seat side into the passenger headrest to the vent.
