When I was at Oshkosh in 2015 I stopped to chat to a poor RV-10 pilot (sorry I can't remember your name, however you had an English accent, so I'm assuming you weren't American, but I digress), who had experienced overheating of his brakes while taxiing in after landing, to the point where the wheel fairing caught fire.
Suffice to say that the undercarriage as a burnt mess.
Considering the potential for overheating of the brakes, I am considering swapping all the Nylok nuts on the undercarriage and brakes with all-metal stop nuts.
Have others adopted a similar course of action as a contingency?
Is there any disadvantage of using the cadmium plated all-metal lock nuts?
Warm regards
Patrick

We replaced all the nylok nuts at the brake calipers with high temperature lock nuts for the very reason you stated - things could get HOT sometimes.

If the nylocs on the calipers get hot enough to fail, you will have already overheated the O rings and likely have brake fluid leaking.
While some have replaced the O-rings of standard MS designation with Viton for heat resistance, there is a lot of mass to dissapate heat in the calipers. Nice to add protection, but the caliper manufacturers seem to mostly use nylock and proably have a good idea the heat stress for those nuts.
