Group,

I have original copies of the Yak Checklist that Bud Harrell put together.
Free, just cover the shipping costs. I also have a Russian copy of the
M-14P Maintenance Manual that I do not need,

Regarding the Housai engine overhauls, our shop is going down that path. We
have been doing major repair - prop strike inspections and hydraulic lock
repairs, for over 10 years on them. We currently have our first full
overhaul in process. There are 2 major problems with overhauling the Housai
in the U.S.:

1. The cylinders are usually high time and show extreme wear. Finding
replacement cylinders is not easy, today. We manufacture the guides,
pistons and rings for the cylinders. We do quite a bit of cylinder overhaul
in our shop.

2. Replacement internal parts, such as gears and shafts are not easily
found. I have built a robust stock of cylinders, accessories and parts for
the M-14P but have not done so with the Housai because there is this good
guy in Omak, WA that takes care of us.

We now make 3 gaskets for the Housai - the nosecase sealplate gasket, the
front and rear diffuser plate gaskets. Die charges to manufacture one
gasket run $150 to $250 on average.

I had a customer call for pricing a Housai overhaul and I told him a minimum
of $25K. The parts count on a Housai is much less, but the amount of work
is about the same as an M-14P. (There are almost 50% more parts in an M-14P
than an R-680.) Then, he thought about installing an M-14P. Once, you begin
to add a new prop, exhaust, cowl louver modification, hoses, etc. the price
tag goes high. The conversation ended with him saying he was going to put
his CJ on the market. I did not want to hear that. Once there is a
perceived hardship in the marketplace, it affects the value of the aircraft
for everyone.

The days of the $8,500 new M-14P are gone. The days of the $12,000,
$15,000, $20,000, $25,000, $30,000 new M-14 are long gone. There is still
that rare back-of-the-hangar gathering dust deal that pops up on a rare
occasion. I had an overseas customer get a quote from Motorstar for a new
M-14P and he was quoted $67K FOB Romania.....I don't know if that was Euros
of USD, but that price will blow your socks off. Perhaps, George or Cliff
would like to give an update on what is happening with Motorstar, today.

Last October, I received this communication from Aerostar: "The company
internal decision related to IAK 52 is to stop the production of the new
aircraft and new spare parts." . M-14P, Inc. manufactures a lot of parts
but I have been motivated to work within our small industry to support one
another and begin a dialogue of what parts are going to become scarce, what
each of us is already manufacturing and how to work cooperatively to produce
the needed parts to keep cost to our customers down.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a rudder cable bracket to a machine shop to
ask them to give me an estimate to make the part. I was quoted 2 days. The
other challenge in the Yak and CJ world is that we are a very niche market.
Machine shops like big runs of parts....not 1 or 10 or 20.....but I don't
want a large quantity of parts mouldering on our shelves, either. It is
truly a balancing act to keep you all in the air. We work very hard at
that.

Quote:
From my perspective, we are transitioning from the days of fire sale prices
- sometime obscenely cheap - for our aircraft to an age of becoming limited

edition, unique aircraft. It is not only vendors that need to work
together, but also owners as a group to make owning these aircraft viable
and desireable.

...Adding MMO once in a while will help! ; )

Thanks, Jill. All you've said needs to be repeated in an article for the RPA's Red Alert. Essential information for all of us.

Group.
As Jill mentioned, Motorstar in Romania does in fact make new
engines. The current price in USD is in the $55 to $60K range depending on
the configuration. They also offer factory remanufactured engines. They are
in the $29K to $33K range depending on the options ordered. They are tested
to the original Russian standards. They are also available with New
Cylinders. They come with a 1yr/100 hr. warranty against materials and
workmanship from the date of service or 3 years from date of shipment.
They manufacture in house most of the parts for the engine. They
also produce new cylinders. They overhaul the accessories and test them to
the original Russian standards. they are the only manufacturer of the
electric start modification.
All engines now come with the 3 ring pistons and the Savarese
ignition system.
You can find on line at motorstarna.com the parts, maintenance, operators,
installation and service manuals.
We can supply all parts and overhaul all accessories.

Thanks Jill,so the wood composite blades we make for Housai replacement are perfect to reduce price and preserv engines ! lower fuel consumption,no crackshaft dammage on prop strike !

Regards to all Alex

On one hand, I'm very supportive of people producing new product for these
aircraft which will help to keep them flying.

On the other hand, I feel strongly that it is misleading to say "no
crankshaft damage on prop strike", unless the blades are so weak that they
fall apart at the sight of the ground! The original Russian V-530 propeller
is wood construction, and the MT props are composite covering a wooden core,
and in both cases will tend to break before causing engine damage, unless
the ground-strike is severe.

But the potential problem is not just the crankshaft, which is pinned
together and so can move after a significant blow, but more likely to be in
the satellite gears in the gearbox which can crack following a
ground-strike. Another potential area of damage is in the supercharger
drive, of course turning at over eight times engine speed.

I'm simply saying that there is no propeller that can prevent engine damage
from a prop-strike. What is more relevant is whether the engine stopped; how
much the blade was damaged; what was the speed of the engine at the time of
impact et cetera.

This is good news for anyone with a Housai powered Chang but there are still a few problems locating parts such as cylinders. From what I have learnt over the years is that the majority of CJ owners in Australia have just bitten the bullet and bought an overhauled engine with 600hrs and sat their old engine, which are for the most, still running fine but are Time Expired, in the back of the hangar and are gathering dust.

With finding reconditioned engines getting more difficult, but not impossible, a lot of CJ owners are now opting to replace them with the M14P. This is a costly exercise here but does seem to come with it's advantages.

My point is there must be many Housai engines sitting around gathering dust which could be used to build up a parts pool for a Company willing to take them on. I'm sure if there was a "Core Value" for a previously running Time Ex engine a lot of guys would be happy to cash it in and get them out of the hangar.

Food for thought......
