Hi Guys,
Looking for advice on lowering CHT for shutdown on my Housai engine. It easily cools to 160C but takes forever to get below 150C. Any recommendations of what to adjust or change?
Thanks,
Andrew

Hello Andrew -
I thought I was the only one with cool-down issues!
My engine is a stock Housai, and I've found it helpful on these stubborn-CHT occasions (after I've run it at 1500 rpm for 15+ seconds) to open the oil cooler door and gill shutters wide, and keep the rpm at 1100-1200. It seems counterintuitive to run the engine at a higher rpm to cool it, but I figure its both circulating oil and forcing air over the cylinders, but on many occasions I've watched the CHT noticeably drop by doing this. Making sure your oil level is on the high end will help as well; for me this means at or above 13 on the stick.
Occasionally, on a very warm day, my CHT just will NOT come below 155/160-deg C, no matter what I've done. On these occasions I just shut down, and close the gill shutters to force the engine temp to drop more slowly to ambient, hopefully reducing the thermal stress.
Hopefully this is helpful-

Try oil scavenge run 1 min at 1400 RPM with gills full open or some
variation thereof.
In summer I usually shut down at 150C or just under. Probably run out of
gas waiting for 140C.

If OAT is 25C or above temp can VFR at 165C. Below 25C then 150C. Part of my before landing checklist besides gear mixture and prop is to open my shutters to get the engine cooled down.

Don't know about the CJ but the YAK M14 sitting I idling is not going below 150 unless it is raining.
That is in mine that is.

High end of green in the winter for better cabin heat (in a YAK). Mid to
lower green to help keep oil temp down in summer.

170 is a good temp. Chinese even say 190. Wait till at least 150 before takeoff otherwise the engine can cough and sputter. Don't let it get too cool on landing in case of a go-around but definitely full open after landing assured so it will cool down before shutdown. 165 above 25C and 150 below 25C on shutdown.

'Morning,
In my CJ in cool temps of Seattle, I keep my gills open fully on T/O, then I let throttle position determine gill position on approach and landing. Dragging in low w/ power means gills open, while throttle to idle means gills (typ) closed to prevent rapid / shock cooling cylinders.
In cruise I like to let my Housai settle between 185 (lowest) to 195-deg C, running 590 mm MAP at about 2050 rpm. Seems to keep me running about 12.5 gal/hr.
I use 20W50 X/C oil, btw.
Hope this helps...

Harv, on a side note. If you live in a place where you experience lower OAT's, you will be using your engine temps to help control your oil temp. In the winter after you have closed your oil cooler door and restricted the air coming into the cooler at the intake on the wing, you may be find you will need to run your engine temp in the high green just to keep the oil temp in the green. It works in reverse on very hot summer days. A lot of money motions going on sometimes to keep oil and engine temps where they need to be.Â
