This thread originally had EFII in the title but I decided to go with SDS for technical reasons so I renamed the thread to reflect SDS EM-5.

With SDS (ECU supplier to EFII) ignition and injection is Z-13/8 a good choice?

Robert Paisley at EFII says "The current draw for the full system is a little under 10 amps at high rpm. About half of that is for the fuel pump.".

Is Z-13/8 suitable for a 20 amp backup alternator or would that lead one to Z-12?

I know I need to do a load analysis.

Thanks for the LA-IFP accident report.

Extensive discussion from August 2014:

http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?t=104794

In the conversation, On Aug 20, 2014, regarding DUAL EFII injection and ignition with Z-13/8, nuckolls.bob(at)aeroelect said:

"I'd probably put 1/2 the equipment on the battery bus and the other half on the main bus. During alternator-out operations, you load-shed
half of the engine support . . .which is readily available by simply turning the master switch back on. The only time this would be necessary is if
you suffered DUAL failures of pretty good hardware in any single tank full of fuel . . . exceedingly unlikely."

But the question of current draw is not completely answered. The battery may be required to make up part of the current required to keep the engine running.

I have concerns about EFII's Bus Manager and dual fuel pump wiring failure modes. I do not plan to use Bus Manager and I will have separate switches and wires for each fuel pump as well as the ECUs.

I have learned that Z19 and Z07, dual battery single alternator, are intended for engines that do not allow dual alternators. Bob Nuckolls points us to Z12 or Z13/8 for Lycomings and others that can mount dual alternators.

Robert Paisley reports system current draw:

=======================

"jmjones2000(at)mindspring, PostPosted: Thu Aug 21, 2014 10:30 am Post subject: Z-19 Function, I just heard back from Robert, EFII power demands on the 12v system, ECUs draw about .1 amps ea, ignition coils draw about 2.3 amps ea at high rpm, one fuel pump draws a little under 5A."

=======================

I wish EFII had better current draw info to share so I could compare to SD-8 output versus RPM. I can only assume from the above that "ECU" means injector ECU plus injectors and "ignition coils" means ignition electronics plus coils. I don't know if pump current varies with injector flow.

What Robert Paisley emailed me is "the full system is a little under 10 amps at high rpm. About half of that is for the fuel pump."
