Hi Guys,
I want to add a landing light to my TR-1. Do you know where I can purchase an acrylic cover that would match the leading edge of the wing? Or have any thoughts? I know Van's sells a kit, but didn't know if it matched our leading edge.

Thanks for the reply! My battery is located behind the passenger seat and
still was told to fly with 30 lbs in the area when flying solo.

Hello Steve, This can be a real do-it-yourself project. Make a simple mold,
buy acrylic sheet from a craft or hardware store (it is really very
inexpensive), heat the acrylic in an oven, drape over mold, trim to fit,
drill holes for fastening screws, and install.
Don't over think this, it is really very easy and simple. Plan on ruining
the first two or three that you make. If you are willing to tackle this, ask
me for more details. Check the internet for molding acrylic sheet.

Steve; FWIW I made my own out of a piece of Plexiglas bought at Home Depot. Cut it slightly larger than needed then using a heat gun CAREFULLY warm it up until you can just barely mold it with a long piece of wood. Do it very slow and it will come out just fine. I practiced with a few pieces until I got the technique down pat.

My airplane was already built so the shape was already there.
I cut the plexiglas to the correct width but slightly longer than needed. I drilled the top holes then screwed the plexiglas in place. As I applied heat I pressed down on the plexiglas with the long piece of wood until it couldn't go any lower. Don't over heat it or the Plexiglas will sag. I did one small area at a time until it was completely formed around the wing. Once the lens was complete, I cut the excess length off and drilled the bottom holes.
Believe me, it is easier said than done. I took me three tries to get the technique down pat but plexiglas is cheap. Be ready to mess up the first few tries but you will really like how it comes out.
Here is a short video of the lights. The lens is so clear it looks as though it isn't even on.

Another technique that keeps the heat away from the leading edge of the week during formation is:
1. Cover the leading edge with packing tape or saran wrap
2. Build a box around the leading edge with cardboard to retain the next step
3. Fill the box with pour-foam, or use Great Stuff from the hardware store
4. Let it cure, then remove from the leading edge. This makes a female mold
5. Make sure you use tape or mold release on the inside of the mold, and fill it with plaster of paris, let cure
6. Heat the acrylic in an oven, and drape it over the mold.
Bob Reed’s web site has a short piece I wrote on installing the lenses after they are formed.

I went with the AeroLED AeroSun 800, which are no longer sold. They replaced them with the AeroSun 1600 which is a little longer. They are AWESOME!

I would have a taxi light on each wing and put the landing light in the cowl.

I cut the plexiglas to the correct width but slightly longer than needed. I drilled the top holes then screwed the plexiglas in place. Hi Steve, I have attached (I hope) a picture of a lens former I made for my
TR4 wing. I cut the wing leading edge out to the length I needed for a
landing and taxi light, then used that cutout as a mold to pour plaster of
paris into to make a form for shaping the lens in the oven. When that didn't
work as well as I wanted, I made a better wood shape and covered it with
metal for a great former that worked fine. A finished lens is shown next to
it. I don't know if the four place leading edge is the same as the two place
but you are welcome to use my former if you want. I may be in INDY next
Tuesday if you would like me to bring it and we could meet up.
