I recently had a sudden loss of coolant on my 912 UL engine which required cylinder head replacement (new style heads). During the loss of coolant incident my Rotax CHT gauge was “pegged” for about 8 to 10 minutes before I safely landed the plane. My question is since the gauge was “pegged” during this time has it been damaged, or can I just re-label it and use it with the new cylinder heads that measure the actual coolant temperature?

Hi Hugh, I would run the fixed engine with the original gauges and look for normal indications. If all appears normal then continue with normal operations. If non-normal indications are noted then replace the gauge.

You can check your temp gauge by testing it in boiling water.

I don't know but a sure fire way to find out is to blow your fan belt then watch your CHT soar to 550. That way you'll know its working correctly.
Motorkote kept it running at that temp & got me back to base. Got so hot it melted the spark plug rubber. The engine was smoking like a forest fire. It should've seized within 1 minute. I flew it that hot for 15+ minutes.
I bought my first u/l in '78. If you guys aren't using Motorkote in your 2-cycle fuel, I highly recommend it. It saved my ass. I use 2 oz to 6 gallons.

Hi.
Just my way of "benchtesting any water probe"
I tested mine by.Removing the inside instrument cluster gauge from the craft (note the wiring for that gauge setup ) removed the probe from the engine block with care.. . (1) using a electronic digital home/kitchen thermometer and a (2) you will need 12 volt battery for wiring hookup (i used my motorcycle battery) (3) hook up the wiring to the gauge and to the probe and the battery as per schematic diagram for that type of gauge. Remeber to ground your gauge by using a Small alligator clip type. get it all set up "BEFORE " heating the water.(4) Use a 12 inch diameter dipper with about 2 inches of regular tap water in it. turn the electric stove on "low" temperature first. ( possibly,use oven mitts to prevent hot steam while doing testing) use a piece of string to just put the engine probe into about 1/2 inch in the water, again make sure that just the lower part ONLY of the probe just touch the water (remember these probes operate on electric resistance measurement) also put your electronic cooking gauge in the water (tie the cooking electronic gauge to the handle of the dipper to prevent it from falling into the water,if this happens you will most likely ruin your cooking thermometer). as the water continue to heat up slowlyyyyyyy from cooler to hotter it will show precisely on the cooking thermometer. At the same time watch VISUALALLY and compare it to the Craft instrument gauge thst you are testing,this will tell you if the sensor and also if the gauge is working properly, this will do 2 tests for you,it will show if it is both working accuracy.
