Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <![endif]--> Hello,

my name is Frank and I have a Kolb MkIII Xtra with a Jab 2200.

It has always been hard to start when cold and I am trying to get that fixed.
I got a new battery but I still have the same issue, it cranks very slowly at first start, or barely turns over at all, and I think it has to do with the grounding of the starter.

I read that the starter needs a grounding strap to help reduce the resistance from the mounting to the frame.

Also , there is some recommendation to change the starter to a Silver body vs a black body..
If anyone has more details I would love to get feedback.

My cell is (408)802-4896. Or pls reply to this post.

Thank you

Hi Frank,

I have an early 3300 with a Black starter also. There needs to be an additional ground wire from a starter mounting bolt to the case. I will take a photo of mine tomorrow and send it to you. How far is your battery from the engine? My old black starter works just fine. It sounds like once you run the engine to where it is hot it will restart ok, is that correct? If that is true it sounds like a ground issue or your cables are to small. Also , check all of your connections.

Tim

Hi Frank,

The silver body starter will help, it's a lot more powerful. But only if you get the electric current to the starter with minimal losses. So that strap will help, it reduces electrical resistance from battery to the starter. All other connections need to be good as well, so check that your ground path is good, and that your starter relay is in good condition.

Other things to look at: A battery with low internal resistance. Not all battery's are made equal. For me a LiFePO4 (EarthX or similar) made a huge difference, and shaved 5 kg off the weight of the plane.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Good morning Guys,
thanks for the replies.
I did more research and the results exactly match your recommendations.
I also contacted the Jabiru USA guys and was told that of all the black starters sold there is a pretty high % that have been replaced.

So.. I will install another grounding wire directly to the body of the starter, I have already cleaned and checked the connections from the battery.
I use heavy battery cables for all my starter wiring, so I believe that should work.
If I continue to have issues I will get a new starter motor, I have about 100Hrs on the engine but given that the silver is a more powerful motor it should solve the problem. I already got a new AeroVoltz battery so I can verify if that makes a difference also and see if my original battery does the job.

Thanks again for your support, nice to be able to go get some advice.
Frank
