Good morning all-
I've noticed the forward, 3-way fitting common to my CJ6's fuel header tank (the Chinese call it "consumption tank") has a slow weep.
Nothing ground the airplane for, but since I'm in town with extra time I'd like to address it sooner than later.
Has anyone removed & reinstalled this fitting before?
My thought is to clean everything, and wet-install the fitting with a fuel resistant sealant. All else in this tank and entire fuel system are tight & working well.
Before I start, does anyone have success stories to share, pitfalls to be aware of?
Much appreciated all-
Justin

A bit of caution might be due here as what you may be seeing is fuel leaking from a portion of the header tank which has corroded through due to sediment building up on the inside over the years. We have seen many which when poked or prodded with a screw driver the "weeping" area quickly turned into a river.

Justin;
There is an interesting conundrum regarding the fuel outlet fitting in the header tank that may be the cause of your leak.
It attaches to the header tank with a 3/8” NPT thread. We all know that pipe thread is universal and is used with metric, SAE, AN, etc. fittings worldwide.
Well; sort of!
Pipe thread originated in Britain during the days of steam and became the world standard. The thread pitch varied with fitting dia. With the 3/8” size the British standard was 19 TPI. At some point in history the US decided to reduce the reduce the number of different pitches in use and the 3/8” was changed to 18 TPI.
In early production of the CJ the Chinese used the original British standard but later the US.
In replacing a header tank some years ago I found the original fitting would not fit properly in the new tank. Finally measured the pitch and the found the discrepancy. Mystified, since all the info I had specified 18, I took the 19 TPI fitting to a machinist friend who immediately said “that’s British”. In a few minutes
he recut it to 18. Problem solved.
The difference is small and could have been forced in to place but taper pipe thread should enter the first few threads easily by hand. I strictly avoid the use of any commercial thread sealers in aircraft pipe fittings and use only Parker Threadlube or Seallube. In 60+ years have never had a problem.
