Congrats Phil. For a long time I thought you would get in the air
before I did. However, life has a way of operating its own schedule. The
important part is you reached the big mile stone, and soon, when you are
really ready, you will do the first flight. I know I didn't plan on 6
weeks from certificate to first flight, but when the problems were
solved, first flight went with very few issues. One of which I expect
Phil will have to watch...high CHT with normal Southwestern temps.

But, I am still "finishing" nearly 100 hours after first flight. I have
made one discovery in my seeking solutions to high CHT during climb. (my
cruise temps and oil temps are fine). The louvers that Vans supplies and
has you install on the inside of bottom rear of the cowl are not very
effective, because there is nothing to draw the air out the openings. As
a test, I cut one bend off some surplus J channel, to create some 1/2"
right angle, and speed taped just forward of the louvers. With OATs
between 85 and 100 I did a few test flights, climbing full throttle with
1/2 flaps and 80-85 climb to simulate worst case cooling. Only after
more than 1000 ft of climb at that speed did a couple cylinders reach
400. The angle just created a low pressure area under the louvers to
extract the air. So the opening is probably large enough, it just needs
a lip or other means to extract the air. Still working on how I
translate that info to a final pleasing design.

Phil and I were a couple of the first quick build deliveries after the
big move in Manila delayed many orders by as much as 8 months. By
comparing notes we found our QB assemblies featured many of the same
errors, omissions, etc. Hard to believe how much has occurred since
those Oct. 2010 deliveries.
Kelly,
40866, flying and finishing. 8^)
