To all,  

I have had a heart attack finally.  I always told everyone I was scheduled to die by 75 and I have beat the odds.  I walked into the ER at our local hospital, explained the situation and told them I was a pilot and not just any stint would  do and that a artery blockage runs….. At that point, they knocked me out and when I awoke, I was told they saved my life, where as I informed them, I walked in here and told you what I  was experiencing and you never gave me a chance to get the right treatment.   Now you’ve put a non approved stint into an artery that is a hereditary blockage and killed my business and flying career.  Needless to say a bit of an adversarial climate ensued for a short while. I’m not sure why?  The blood thinners gave me bleeding from  both ends and that was a pain in the nose and arse.  Stopping the bleeding was in a word, BRUTAL. 

  

Of Course AME extraordinaire Dr. Ira Rampil, researched my case and assured me that provided I take drugs for the rest of my life to compensate for the type stint installed, I will be able to get back on flying status in six months or so  provided we supply a ton of paperwork and I am a good boy and don’t over do it.  To be expected, and I am not concerned because I am very good at bureaucratic paperwork, the good boy, Anita is working on. 

  

I am fine now, with no heart damage, as strong as ever, bored to tears, well behind and now that I am away from the blunt force trauma doctors of a normal hospital, am seeing specialists and couldn’t be happier with my treatment to work  around my now minor issues.  Keep in mind, they only practice medicine in hospitals, take some advice and get some specialists lined up with your normal physical especially if you are concerned about heart attacks.  I was too slow in preparing for my particular  problem as my EKG and scans were all fine in the past. 

  

Anita and I am still planning on Sun ‘n Fun from April 4-9 on site N-55 as last year featuring Airmaster Propellers.  The Europa Club will be well represented by Steve Pitt and Paul Mansfield.  We all will enjoy seeing those of you who  can make it down for some Fun in the Sun.

So sorry to hear of your heart attack.  Hope you are on the mend and enjoying cardio rehab (LOL).  We sure need you in the Europa world!  

With the changes in medical certification you will likely be back in the air one way or another.

I wish you all the best for your recovery. We all certainly enjoy reading your in depth postings and it would be a great loss to lose them.

You may be pleased to hear about the experience of a pilot friend. Some years ago he had 4 stents put in, after which he got his Class 2 medical back.

Then about 4 years ago he had 4 more stents put in (one inside a previous one even), and again he got his medical back.

Then 2 years ago he had a quadruple bypass op. Well it took him a lot longer to get over that one but several months ago he got his medical back again.

Too many coronary stents are placed in the US.  

Further, and relevant to the current discussion, there are 

two different stent technologies: BMS and DES. DES currently requires 

life-long treatment with powerful anticoagulants which I have often seen 

lead to life threatening intracranial bleeds (which I had to treat), or various

and sundry other forms of hemorrhage, like Bud described, which may 

sometimes also be life threatening. BMS stents are cheaper and only 

require a short period of anticoagulants.  



Witty observers of the current health care system have said that some 

cardiologists view the human body as simply a delivery system for the 

heart to arrive at the next cardiology appointment. The effects of DES-

mandated therapy like modern, potent, irreversible anticoagulants 

on other organ systems are not often duly considered.

Hey Bud,

   Sorry to hear about your troubles but I'm very happy it's all good now.

Maybe they really did save your life even if it was not an FAA certified

part. I have had pretty good luck with non-certified parts!

Guys, 

Thanks for the support.  Hope to see as many as can make it to Sun ‘n Fun.  Let’s not clog up the list with this personal stuff. 

  

Looking forward has always been difficult for me as there are no crystal balls, but leaders anticipate what the future holds, stick to their dreams, but deal with the realities and minimize their affect on the ultimate goal.  Those who  can’t, loose sight of their goal, react to adversity by changing their goals, fail to deal with reality and retreat to what they believe is safety.  That’s defeatism. 

  

My strength is good, spirits high, and vision clear, I will continue to fly, enjoy camaraderie with my fellow pilots and keep tinkering on airplanes for the foreseeable future.  I know one thing, stay out of hospitals, they are full of  sick people, and it’s contagious.  

  

Thanks, and get on with building, upgrading and flying and enjoying life.

I am fine now, with no heart damage, as strong as ever, bored to tears, well behind and now that I am away from the blunt force trauma doctors of a normal hospital, am seeing specialists and couldn’t be happier  with my treatment to work around my now minor issues.  Keep in mind, they only practice medicine in hospitals, take some advice and get some specialists lined up with your normal physical especially if you are concerned about heart attacks.  I was too slow  in preparing for my particular problem as my EKG and scans were all fine in the past. 

  

Anita and I am still planning on Sun ‘n Fun from April 4-9 on site N-55 as last year featuring Airmaster Propellers.  The Europa Club will be well represented by Steve Pitt and Paul Mansfield.  We all will enjoy  seeing those of you who can make it down for some Fun in the Sun.
