Looking for feed back from anyone who has replaced their baklan.

I like the Trig TY91, compact remote head, dual monitoring flip flop.

Anyone?

Cheers

Al Pickering.

I know of two Yak 52ıs where the installation of the TRIG TY91 was
problematic.

A lot of noise and several avionics specialists tried to figure out why
but were unsuccessful until now.

And yes, the installation was done by professionals.

All the precautions were taken, measurements done (SWR etc Š).

The noise comes from the engine, thru the antenna, that has been
established with certainty.

But finding a solution is something else. Filters were applied on the
engine, no cure.
Only my 2 cents,

Jan

Had a dual head TY91 radio fitted in my -52 nine months back, replacing SPU-9 intercom panels in each cockpit, and TS21 transponder replacing the Baklan.

Reused existing YAK antenna with new RF cable ... don't use the ADF so I believe the splitter was removed.

Worked closely with my UK avionics guy (Andy Stevens - 40+ years experience) and Trig on wiring loom design.

That integrates YAK audio alerts (G & Stall) to aux audio & brings all the data connections to one D connector (front cockpit by starboard side external access panel) to make it easier to add new kit comms in the future.

Took care in using recommended gauge power/data cabling and attention to manufacturer's earthing / install guidelines - no engine noise issues at any stage.

I also designed some 3D printed mounts (Selective Laser Sintering) to optimise the display viewing angle (up and left towards pilot) that enables the TY91/TS21 head units to directly mount in the panel without any alteration, just bolts straight in.

At which point I'll declare an interest ... I'll be launching a web site in the next few weeks where the mounting plates and other designs / services will become available.

Bottom line - careful design and install has not caused any engine noise issues in my -52 with Trig kit.

For a start, myself being NO electronics wizard I installed the Trig in the 18 T myself for 8.33 requirement in EU. We had a LOT of noise in the headsets when NOT doing radio calls. The calls were clear all the time. All shielding of wires and HT leads were saved as standard. In the end it was my mistake to hook up the stall warning wire onto the mic input to the Trig that is very sensitive. Now when I found out somehow and cut that joint and used the aux for the warnings finally all is perfect and super clear radio comms and intercom via Trig.

Thatıs what makes it so difficult.

Some have good experiences with Becker, others donıt. Same with TRIG.

My point is only: even after having it installed according to the books,
works done by professionals using the correct cables and following the
manual in every nitty gritty detail, you can still have (a lot of)
problems.

Rob, you probably have a 52 that is less noisy than some others.

With a pre-war electrical system and unsuppressed relays everywhere I've yet to find an electrically 'quiet' YAK-52 and the only concession to modernity in mine is the automotive plug conversion :-)

Problems will primarily stem from one or other of an oversight in installation and materials or a faulty (noisy) aircraft system.

I can certainly agree that any of these can be difficult to isolate but if they were fundamental shortcomings in the kit (Trig, Becker etc) then everyone would have similar problems, which is not the case.

My Flightline 760 works perfect in my 18T. No noise at all. I do have the auto plugs and alternator,
