|
|
Another question, that popped up during the thorough inspection in the workshop:
My friend found corrosion on the inner sides of the steel tubes of the engine/nose wheel mounting frame of my Europa XS, finished in the year 2001. It’s not yet clear how much corrosion there actually is, but anyway I want to address this problem as early as possible. I’m thinking about flooding the frame with ACF50 if accessible. My Europa was based in Perranporth close to the coast, which – although always hangered - may have contributed to a higher amount of corrosion.
Has anyone had corrosion in the frame tubes as well and what did you do to protect the inner sides against corrosion? I guess changing the whole frame is a hell of a job which I’d very much like to avoid.

Hi Roland
have you had the frame reinforcement mod done?
http://www.europa-aircraft.com/pdfs/modifications/Mod%2072.pdf
I used fire intumescent paste in the lower tubes to stop flame or smoke being
feed into the cockpit,
the 8mm to 12mm reducer for the 914 Fuel pumps are normal, i would change them from the plastic ones you have to Brass or aluminium as the plastic ones get brittle and crack,
don’t forget to remove the small inlet fuel filter just inside the inlet side of
the pump to clean it, it’s quite fragile so be careful,

Good morning Ivor,
thank you for your reply, we'll do the work with due diligence, as you suggested. Out of interest - where did you buy the Brass or Aluminium reducers?
The MOD on the engine mounting frame is carried out, since my Europa was on the G-Register until 2011, so subject to the LAA maintenance scheme.

Hi Roland
it’s ten years since i done mine and i used some brass ones,
but these steel ones would be preferable to plastic,
https://www.amazon.co.uk/12mm-Steel-reducer-joiner-connector/dp/B009C877ZC
with a bit of googleing im sure you can source some aluminium ones,
best wishes

All clear! It turned out, that the corrosion is only superficial and will be treated with Brunox epoxy and painting to prevent the frame from more serious damage.
