Hi Guys
I have bought an iLevil 3SW and would appreciate advice where to fit it avoiding or minimising magnetic effects.. It could go on or under the parcel shelf on my 914 trigear or in the roofspace between the doors, I am just not sure hence the plea for advice.

We have just completed the LAA mod for the replacement rubber at the lower end of the polypropylene filler using the specified bent aluminium tube and the fluorsilicate connecting pieces  It was a simple process, however the original rubber elbow was found to be in perfect condition with no signs of deterioration whatsover. Another £85 wasted but well worth the inspection.

Installation in an empty aircraft opens up plenty of possibilities.

However, throw in some luggage, a fuel can (metal mandatory at MOGAS stations above 10lt), folding chair, rudder lock (in my case metallic), etc.

The results are then somewhat different. Example - a compass that deviates by 20-30 degs if it is fitted immediately beneath the baggage floor.

Recommendation is to fit it as far away as possible from the baggage area. In the roof maybe the best place. I think l would go aft of the D-panel depending on your antenna arrangement.

We originally located our magnetometer aft of the D panel at the side near the fuselage top and bottom joint. We had a lot of problems due to the movement of the tailplane counterweight, even though it is nearly 2 feet away.

We eventually located it overhead between the doors and have had no further problems. In this location, baggage and metal items in the baggage bay do not influence it either.

Jim,

Yes that is a good point. There is a lot of metal back there.

I am involved in major MOD (to special missions configuration) of a number of aircraft. They range from UAV types up to Global Express 6000. One of the interesting aspects for me (being predominantly a structures/stress guy) is the extraordinary efforts gone to by the systems/avionics guys to minimise interference (or maximise performance) of all the clever electronics.

Their kit is different but the problems are similar (and more expensive to fix). Compliance to regulatory and client specific requirements is mandatory. The EMC and EMI studies are therefore very necessary - but utilise software and test equipment that we could also apply to our aeroplanes (which are rapidly becoming way more complex than recent airliners and military aircraft).

Food for thought.

Hi Guys & Girls
Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I think I will go for the roof option but am worried about threading or routing the pressure lines and wiring.
Also thanks William your report should be interesting when you have flown on Tuesday or whenever, I look forward to that.

I put my ilevil 3AW in the roof to the rear of my Dynon ADAHRS.  It is plumbed into the dynamic port with a T.  The static is vented to the cabin.
I have a Samsung TAB A and a Samsung S8 both running Naviator.  The attitude information was laggy until I rebooted the Samsung TAB A.  The S 8 the attitude info was reversed  - showing left bank when turning right for example.  This was very strange indeed.  However it corrected itself after a reboot.
Airspeed was 4kt slower on the levil than the Dynon.  Otherwise no issues.
So my lesson from this is to reboot your tablet and then connect to the levil wifi and then launch your application.  Ensure that you don't have any other applications running.  I would also suggest connection to the ship's power and turning on the option to not switch off on external power (developer options in android)because it seems that changing wifi connections can confuse it.
I still have to calibrate the compass and run more tests.

Just a side note, there is no/minimal lag with an apple device fwiw

Might it be worthwhile to plumb the static to reduce/eliminate the difference?

Cheers,
Pete

Both static are vented to the cabin so it's unlikely that that is the source of the difference.
the rebooting cured the lag...but on the whole I agree that IOS apps tend be more developed than android devices

Thats odd.... you may want to email Ananda at Levil, and check to see if the pitot sensor calibration can be corrected.
