Flew the FF for a bit over an hour a couple nights ago, and it is becoming apparent that the little windshield is not big enough, or the right shape, getting a lot of face buffeting from the wind coming around it.
If any of you have a windshield design that works really good for keeping the wind off your face, maybe you could post a picture?
And if it is a big folding windscreen like Kolb is currently using, how does it secure on the right side after you close it?
Single seat Firestar windshields that work good would also be helpful.
Edited to add a picture of the windshield: John, I think I could mod this current one a bit and and add a fairing something like you have and try it. Save making a whole new one, and if it doesn't work just right, I'm not out anything. Thanks.

I don't remember what your windshield looks like, Richard.
Before I modified my FS windshield I had to wear a David Clark cloth helmet
and goggles. Wind so bad it would blow a ball cap off and blur my vision.
My nose and the space between my goggles and cloth helmet was always wind
burned and peeling.
I came up with the idea of a fairing on top of the windshield. First
iteration was too short. Next prototype was just about right. Photo
attached.
When the fairing was complete I had gained a few MPH cruise. Seems the
fairing kicked a lot of wind over the center section instead of the flat
bulkhead behind my me.

John, Just curious, how did you attach the fairing to the existing windshield?

I believe I used small .032 6061 aluminum tabs, on rivet top and bottom.
Bend the tabs to meet the curve of the windshield. I probably used a
cardboard template to get the shape, then went to the 1/16" Lexan.

Here is a jump to my solution for my Firefly.

It worked quite well, in that, it deflected the wind to just above my head. You can always cut the arc taller than needed and then fly and determine where the edge of the direct airflow is passing over your head, and then, trim the arc as needed to lower the flow to just over your head.

Attached a picture of mine. Original Firestar. I lock the windshield down with a old fashion screen door (small)bolt latch. The windshield prop rod locks into a sheet steel support on nose cone support.
The windshield is .060 pecan.

I hate auto correct. That was suppose to say, .060 Lexan.
I originally had ordered.080 Lexan. But, Aircraft Spruce sent the wrong stuff. It worked great though. It vibrates a little while you’re on the ground, but is very smooth inflight.

Thanks, it works well. You still need a way of holding down the front of the windshield. That’s why I use the prop rod. The 3/4” aluminum channel is from the Home Depot as was the latch.

I tried to make a new windshield just making it 6 inches taller but the wind bent the top down in flight. Needs some kind od support.

I made mine during the winter a year ago. It is basically the same angle as the nose pod. I have had no problems inflight. I think .060 Lexan is a minimum thickness to eliminate the chance of any bending inflight. I also don’t exceed 70mph.
It is actually well reinforced on the sides with aluminum channel that fits over the cage rails. I put rubber weather stripping in the channel where the windshield sits over the entry side rail to protect the cages covering. I’ll attach a couple of more pictures.
These are actually pictures taken over a year ago. I’ve made an all new dash,
added Black Max hydraulic brakes and gone from my 377 Rotax to a 2702 Hirth engine and gearbox w/ a 64” Powerfin prop over this winter. I’ve only got to fly it once this year and it was just too cold. Maybe next week?
