Al,
I'm planning to switch to the Van's fuel floats. One option I can recommend against is the Princeton Capacitance Probes. I have calibrated them 6 times - emptying the tanks each time and refilling in 1 gallon increments. It took hours and the probes have never indicated accurately. They occasionally indicate a quantity that is known to be near the reading, but then begin to erratically go from full to empty and everything in between. I strongly recommend against them.
There is probably a way to mount a dip stick on the gas cap, but I doubt it is worth the effort. I use the fuel flow and manually calculate. It has been remarkably accurate.
Agree that the canopy rollers need improvement. I've disliked them since I installed them. If you come up with a good solution I'd like to hear about it.
Other than changing the seat back support (which you do not want to do) I know of no way to adjust it aft. I have never worried about it because I'm 5'-10" and my son is 6', so the current situation is not a problem for us.
Are you currently building or is your airplane finished? I made numerous "improvements" to my 8A during building and I am currently gutting it to install all new radios-EFIS-AP-ADSB. Thinking about a supercharger-normalized.
Where are you located?
You should come and race with us at Reno.

1=Does anyone know of an accurate fuel measuring device for RVs? (RV8A) I have
Garmin G3X Touch with the Stewart Warner floats.
Because the throw (depth of tank) is relatively short the gauges read 16 gal when
full (21g) and stay there until there is about 13g left, aside from that they
are pretty accurate.
Im thinking that a dipstick type of gauge attached to the bottom of the fuel cap
could be worked out..Any thoughts???
2= I would like to see an improvement to the canopy rollers, it seems to me that
a hard rubber wheel would work better.
3= I remember when building I had seen a mod to allow the pilot seat back to move
more rearward (My seat back sits up too straight) wonder if there is a more
simple way to accommodate that then changing and modifying
the center support bar.
Thanks, always looking for improvements |

Hmm,
I would expect that adding much power, whether via supercharger,
turbocharger or bigger engine would be of some concern. Van's states a
Vne for most of their models, including the -8 at 200kts or 230 mph true
airspeed. I am familiar with an -8 with the IO-390 engine that can get
very close to that Vne in level flight. The Vne is set due to the design
flutter speed. Vans has a white paper that is mostly aimed at the 10,
against turbo-normalizing, which does the calculation that if 75% power
can be maintained to 12,000 ft, the aircraft can exceed that Vne at that
power setting. Everyone makes their own choices with experimental
amateur built. I choose to pay attention to that Vne with my -10.
