For sure....mine is like that because its a base model 912 and came like that.

That said i do like the fact that the engine is not electrically dependant.

yours is an interesting solution for sure, but I think, that the Silent Hektik product is an inexpensive, light and easy way if you have a standard Rotax 914 already.

Hello Will,

to be independent of electricity is indeed a big advantage. However there are few modern engines (Rotax iS, Continental CD 155 Diesel, car engines....) which aren't.

As far as I know there was only one (documented) electrical related accident in Switzerland with a Rotax 914 powered MCR01, which didn't have a standard setup if my memory serves.

That said, it's of course always better to have redundancy (other than just the battery), especially in a plane and that is why I'll go for the Silent Hektik product.

Wiliam/Roland,
I have suffered a rectifier failure part way across a long N Sea crossing but had plenty of battery to get me home. I have also demonstrated that it (ie a 914) works perfectly well if you switch off alternator and master switch in the standard wiring scheme. So personally I would go for the KISS and keep it light principles. Regards, David Joyce, GXSDJ

David,

I'd always agree concerning the KISS - generally. But this is a safety feature with a weight penalty of just 0,2kg. You have a Smart Ass installed, right? You have a complex 914 instead of a much more simple 912....

With the standard wiring I switched off the alternator master on the ground and the engine started cauthing after some time, maybe due to the low RPM.

To each his own....

Actually I think we worry too much about this.  
When was the last time you had a (modern) car stop once it was running?  I cant remember this ever happening to me and I have some pretty ropy cars.  I once had a BMW R75/6 stop because the capacitor failed but apart from that I cant think of a single instance of an internal combustion engine stopping once it was running -  including a wide variety of tanks, motorbikes cars etc in nigh on 40 years of driving.
Come to think of it I cant remember any of my parents cars stopping once they were running - ah yes once when the fuel filter was almost blocked.
Normally if they start and you feed them they continue to run.
