So I found a 2002 Mark III with low hours and excellent workmanship and fell in love-yup my mistake-but its powered by a 140 hour 2si 690 L 70 two stroke. The owner-builder had a forced landing due to plugged fuel filter and he and spouse got big eyes at the close power lines returning to his strip. The plane has been in the hangar for 6 years. I'm a ppl but last logged hours 25 years ago. I live on a 5x6 square mile island in Lake Michigan at the mouth of Green Bay. Island and county is 65 percent wooded so a forced landing would require lots of luck and I'm told 2 strokes don't give a warning before death. I can't afford a 912 and can't find alot about the 2si except 1000 hour TBO. Do I need to be smart and walk away? You know Larry's videos and John's adventure stories make that hard to do!

Holm-mer - FWIW and IMHO you’re too inexperienced to fly safely..
PLEASE get some PIC training in something before the accident instead 0f after.
Sounds as tho your flying area isn’t at all hospitable
And you say you can’t afford a 912? you might be saying you can’t afford to live.

Check barnstormers, eBay, Craigslist,,    maybe you can get a good used 912 at a reasonable price.

i have seen that 3 cylinder sell for under a grand . a 582 new will give you alot of years of truble free flying

One more thing.,...Some where there is a list of engines by serial number that have been stolen...   If you can find the list,, compair the serial number of an engine you are thinking of purchasing to the stolen list before you buy.    
Some one on the kolb group may be able to help you find the stolen engine list.
If you find a match call the cops.
If someone asks why you want the serial number, tell them you want to check for a list of service bulletins for that engine.  Or ask if they have a list .

My first question is how much does the fellow want for the MKIII? Because for a 912 your going to invest another 20 grand in the airplane. There are other ways to go on the engine. Second question is , do you actually have a runway on the island. And third are your willing to put the time and money into getting training for a LSA ticket? Another fairly expensive project. Just asking?

George, why would Randy need a sport pilot ticket if he's a private pilot? You did know PPL means Private Pilot License, didn't you?

Rotax publishes a list of stolen engines as a service bulletin IIRC. You can find it on the Rotax Owner's site.If you're just going around the pattern the SI *might* be okay. I'll believe those 1000 hour TBO's when I see the distributors put one on the test stand and document it. A buddy of mine with a 503 on an Airbike made it to 600 and some hours then a piston skirt broke and he spent far more fixing it than if he'd overhauled it per Rotax. Not to mention being grounded for six months screwing around with it.
If you're not willing to do the adaptation to get a four stroke engine pass on the good deal and save up for a 912 powered Mk III.

Yeah, but after 25 years of inactivity to renew your ticket and get current would be quite costly. And a third class medical certificate. Unless he has stayed current on his medical. In which case it wouldn’t be a big deal. George H.

How is the VW engine doing Richard?? Smile I have a lot of ribbon that can be used as rib reinforcing tape ...John...Smile

Thinking about the little island and the MkIII ....how about turning it into a float plane..?

I would buy it in a ny minute if it was in the 4500 dollar range...and repairable...2SI engine is worth very little...Not supported with parts near as I know...?

The New KOlb is using Hirth engines...so I guess we need consider that they are much improved.. Some of the 2000 series engines had weak head bolts..fine threads, very sensitive to torgue...also the bolt holes were close to the cylinder wall and over torgueing swelled into the cylinder wall ..not good... I think the 3k series have a good track record...

A good idea is to call Bryan at Kolb and ask about how these engines are doing...

Good deals are available on 912's but the word on the 80 hp model is mixed...100 hp 912 can be had for 8 to10k at times...but some for sale on Barnstormers seem to be scams...especially north of the border...or across the pond...

Some where there is a list of engines by serial number that have been stolen... If you can find the list,, compair the serial number of an engine you are thinking of purchasing to the stolen list before you buy.

Some one on the kolb group may be able to help you find the stolen engine list.

If you find a match call the cops.

If someone asks why you want the serial number, tell them you want to check for a list of service bulletins for that engine. Or ask if they have a list .

He doesn't need to get a medical. He qualifies as a Sport Pilot once he
gets a current BFR in his log book. Less than a thousand dollars, tops, to
get flying again.

As long as his medical wasn't revoked or an application denied, there's no requirement for a medical when flying as a sport pilot.

There is no renewal of a pilot's license (unless the FAA suspended or revoked it for cause). Getting signed off after a new biennial flight review might be costly, or it might be 2 or 3 hours with an instructor. Highly dependent on the individual. Doing it in a high drag, low energy a/c would obviously be a good idea as prep for a Kolb, but not a requirement to be legal.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! To get into a Kolb Light Sport as a private ticket holder I would get rusty pilot dual time, bfr log entry, and transition to type time. I have read lots of accident/ incident reports of bad things happening to those who try to just "wing it" on their own in light sport pushers with high drag. You have confirmed my thoughts on 2 stroke flying in my neighborhood. I'll get some dual this winter in light sport in AZ for the fun of it and- keep the boat! Thanks again for your input. And fyi the island has a great airport with two well maintained grass runways used by ga owners with summer homes here.

You can put a new redrive VW on the plane and it will serve you well for a bunch less than a used 912.

If you have had your medical pulled by the FAA then you must get it back before dropping down to Sport Pilot. If not, then your drivers license is good for a sport pilot medical.
