I have my first auto plug CJ-6 motor and have been having trouble starting it. In frustration, I replaced the front plugs and gaped them as advised on this forum. She started right up and ran like a top for about 4 flights and then nothing. Not hitting at all on starting. Free air spark is good. The mag cap shows signs of arcing, more carbon than I have ever seen.
I have not found any obvious flaws in the mag, any suggestions?

Hi Jim;
-----“more carbon than I have ever seen” sounds ominous.
Take a very close look at the mag. housing close to the removable HT transfer pin for evidence of
carbon tracking. If you find tracking evidence here (or anywhere else for that matter) it must be removed.
In some cases “cleaning” is not enough and will require some material removal. If that requires removal of the “red” coating that coating must be reapplied.
It is Glyptal 1201 and is available in brush or spray bomb form.
If the HT transfer pin is involved replace it. I would recommend the Russian rather than the Chinese pin. If none are available I can fabricate one for you.
Further thought: Will it start and run if you are holding the start button in??? If so it is running on the start ignition system from the boost coil rather than
the magnetos. That would tend to confirm a magneto problem
Best;
Walt
