I wonder if anyone has come across this.
Hj 460 grew up in a warm climate. Passing through Mississippi we encountered sub zero temperatures. Two things happened. Â
One was that one of the doors wouldn't open...it had shrunk in the cold and came into contact with the surround.
The other was the engine would only reach 5200. I surmised that this was because I set the propeller fine stop for Colombia on a warm day at 8500'. At zero ft and close to freezing the air was much denser and therefore the fine stop was set too coarse. And so it proved. yesterday with a very warm afternoon in FL she made 5700 as normal.

Will,
You are spot on with your analysis.
First the prop: Density altitude determines engine power and prop pitch for appropriate setting… As I said before. Reset your stops on the fine pitch to 5650 RPM and the course setting on a 64 inch prop to 4000 at max continuous power. These settings prevent a fine pitch overspeed on takeoff/go around and the course setting allows cruise setting up to Vne without the engine RPM climbing during the dive.
Doors: Yep, things built at 30C suddenly asked to work at -10C do not respond well. (The doors are vinylester carbon and glass and the fuselage epoxy and glass so they move differently over 40-50C. The door seals also get quite hard at low temps.) Now that you are in Florida, leave the doors closed and things should normalize in a few days. Worse case scenario if still out of alignment, heat your shoot bolt guide in the door sills and remove them and reset to allow proper movement.
Registration:
It is relatively easy to convert to a US registry. I would recommend you spend a little time on: https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/import_aircraft/
Next: contact the Miami FSDO (Flight Standards Duty Office) (also on line) and get their input. Forms and folks are available at the Miami office to help you. The registration form is an 8050-1. Easy to fill out. Fees are small. They are normally pretty responsive. The FAA Rep may come out and redo your airworthiness inspection for free. Talk to them. If you have to use a Designated Airworthiness Rep, expect to pay $500 up to $1000.
Stay away from the Tampa FSDO, as they are slow and unresponsive to experimental anything.
I use Federal Aviation Title in Oklahoma City (right down the street from the FAA headquarters) for all my registration work. Superior service. Their website is: http://www.federalaviationtitle.com/ They walk the forms through and you have your FAA registration complete in a few days, rather than the typical months. They are also a great source of information if our Federal employees at the Miami FSDO are less than responsive. Their fees are minor also as they guarantee completion. Typically around $60.
Bottom Line, transferring from foreign registry to US is not a big deal. Contact Aviation Title and get the ball rolling.
Glad to have you in the States.
Best Regards,
Bud Yerly

Hi Will,
if only the upper door frame gets in contact with the roof/fuselage and leaving the plane for a couple of days for settling doesn't work, you can just file the upper door frame a little. A fellow Europa friend suggested that after I almost lost the right door in flight, thus pulling it close very hard to get it locked again. After that incident the door was deformed a little bit.
As for your flight to the US: well done!

Roland thanks,Â
actually it wasnt that bad just a loud "clack" on opening the door. The door would open fine if I just pressed down on the top between the doors or up on the inside of the door. However I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. I will file it down a bit when I get round to it.
The prop pitch issue argues that if you set the pitch stop for Florida you wont develop full take off power on a cold day in Alaska which is potentially a safety issue. Luckily I was taking off from long paved runways on my trip round the gulf but even so the engine sounded labored under take off power 37" MAP at 5200.

Hello William,
Firstly, congratulations on your achievement with respect to your epic
journey. That's what I call a trip!
Regarding your door problem, I had this trouble when I fitted my doors
and found I was making very little progress trying to sand the edge of
the doors for clearance. It suddenly dawned on me that a small spacer
placed midway between the hinges on top of the door surround should work
and to my delight it fixed the problem immediately. The packing has to
be thick enough to ensure the surface of the top of the door is level
with the corresponding surface on the fuselage. Try a piece of
cardboard with sticky tape first if you have any doubts about it working.
