While shopping for a transponder antenna for a Garmin 45R, some are listed as open circuit and some as dc grounded. Is there any difference in the way they are mounted or perform? Also reading the AE chapter on antennas again, it states that a 5 1/2" solid disk is sufficient as a transponder antenna ground plane. Coincidently my mount for the antenna in a fabric aircraft is 6"x6" aluminum. I had planned on expanding the ground plane using 1" copper tape. Would that improve antenna performance or should I stick with the mount as is?

I'd leave it alone.
