My Varley Red Top 25 battery became elderly and tired, so a friend said I could have a Lucas battery which he couldn't use. I tried it but wasn't happy with seeming inability to hold a full charge for very long, so it must be replaced. I've been aware for a long time that several/many Europas have the Odyssey PC680 installed, so I compared the specification claims of the Odyssey and the Varley and the differences between the two are remarkable, although weighing the same and of similar dimensions. Another friend with a Europa has just recommended to me the Tayna ENDUROLINE battery which he swears by and I'll add it below:
Odyssey PC680 16Ah CCA 170 7.0kg. PHCA 520 (5 sec).
Varley Red Top 20Ah CCA 230 7.0kg. PHCA not stated.
Enduroline EC680 26Ah PHCA 600 (5 sec). CCA not stated.
Who's telling porky pies? Why such large differences between their capacities and CCAs from almost identical sized cases?

I have been using the odyssey PC680 for the last 10 years and changing
Them every 3 years and haven’t had a problem,
It doesn’t answer your specific question but I am a satisfied customer
And wouldn’t hesitate in recommending an odyssey for a Europa,

I also have been using the Odyssey PC680 for 10 years with no problems.
I have just purchased one from Tayna, it arrived next day after ordering.
They say the PC680 life is 3 to 12 years but I feel 5 years is safe! I
renew at rubber renewal time which is now and I have only found
deterioration on the outside of the 2inch filler rubber connect tubing
so far?

I’ve been using the PC680 since 2002. Very good luck with them. Last one I replaced was 10 years old.

Thanks very much for your quick replies, guys. I'm not surprised at how many of you sing the praises of the Odyssey PC680 and I'm also encouraged that Ken has opted to purchase a Tayna. But I'm still mystified at the very significant differences in capability claims made by the different manufacturers.
The temptation for me is to choose whichever one claims the highest CCA, so I'm hoping that someone out there can give me an insight into the veracity of the various claims.

I changed my PC680 at 15 years, but needn't have bothered as there was no improvement in cranking speed with the new battery.

Hi Jonathan,
To contribute to to your original question (which is indeed fascinating) i think the answer may have to do with the internal chemistries/construction of each, the way each Mfr interprets e.g. CCA and CA testing and their market focus. I believe that:
Varley have the best Pulse Hot Cranking Amp performance because they are of sealed bog std lead acid construction. But this comes at the price of life (from apprenticeship days i recall that the pure lead plates can buckle under continuous high-amperage discharge and eventually this and sulphation shorts an individual cell, dropping the battery voltage).
The Odessey and the Tanya are both Absorbed Glass Mat tech - a tech which seems to offer a better life at the expense of lower Cold-Cranking Performance and capacity - a kind of compromise. In my view this is perhaps best type suited to our application given the sometimes lengthy time gaps between use. The 912S's higher capacity starter motor is rated at 0.9kW at 12v which translates to a demand of 300A for 1 sec and then 75A for the remainder to the maximum 10-second start cycle. So providing the battery cabling is short and 4AWG/16mm2 those were the reasons for my choice of the Odessey battery.
Whilst Odessey list Aircraft use as an application, Tanya seem to list the EC680 as predominantly a Motorcycle battery. Even more curious is that Tanya will sell both batteries - with the EC680 being £20 cheaper. Vibration durability perhaps?

There is also a lot of re-badging going on in the battery world and i wonder if the PC680/EC680 is an example of that
Hope it can add to the debate . . .

Clive, your reply is really helpful and your "re-badging" suggestion is more or less borne out by a man I spoke to at Tanya, although who's to say whether the "own brand" EC680 is of just as high a quality as the PC680. The £20 reduction in price might suggest cheaper components and processes.
So I "bit the bullet" and ordered the Odyssey, after having been beaten into submission by the overwhelming flood of testimonials in its favour. Thanks to all for the repeated "lashes with the Odyssey whip". I feel so much better for having run the gauntlet!
